Anyone know of a GS in Southern California that can replace the barrel on my Savage Axis 243 Win with a drop-in barrel? I have found a couple barrel makers( out of state) that will also install the barrel if I send my barrel action to them. The trouble is that in Cal, when they send it back it must go though a FFL holder and be reregistered as if it was gun that I was buying from out of state. Between the FFL holder service charge -DROS fee and shipping it could run up to over $120.

No, if the barrel maker has an FFL it does not have to be DROSED again. If the rifle is not already in your name then perhaps. There are several gunsmith in SOCAL. Try Calguns.net for specifics in your exact area. Shipping is the same everywhere. The rifles receiver is the "firearm" if it is registered in your name, it does NOT need to be done again.

Get ahold of Shooter71 here on the fire. Great smith. fast, reasonable rates AND good communication.

You could also just order a barrel and buy a barrel nut wrench and barrel vise and swap it yourself.

Shaen (shooter71) IS the best I have used so far. Can’t imagine going anywhere else unless he starts to get a crazy backlog. Call him, insert barreled action in box, take to post office and ship.....nothing hard about it..... depending on where your “local” gunsmith is, it’s actually easier and faster.

Thank you very much for the kind words guys, means a lot. More importantly, if anyone isn’t happy with my work, please let me know.
