My range is no longer providing target stands. I am looking for something portable and will ideally hold 2 targets sxs or up and down.. I can make one but I want to see what you guys are using. I would like a steel base. I have seen some home made stands with PVC but none that I liked. I would staple cardboard on it as backing.
This looks pretty good:

This looks versatile and very portable:

Long time ago I was helping a heating guy, and I scarfed up 3 furnace filter frames. Ripped some 2x4's in half and built around them. I have precut cardboard that I staple targets to and just slide them in to change out targets. You can vary cardboard height to suit.

I built these out of PVC, and screwed J-Trim on the inside perimeter to slide the cardboard backers into. Rather than glue, I used caulk to hold them together. Makes replacing easier if/when needed. I don't caulk the uprights to the base for ease of transporting, or the top piece for changing targets.

I like the idea of sliding in the cardoard backing. Very nice. Beats using a stapler

Simple to make target stand with 1"x2" furring strips and one 1"x4" at top, eye bolts on each side, steel rod to go thru eye bolts and impale into ground. Binder clips to attach targets. Scrap plywood backing.

have you thought about leftover political signs? Come with a lightweight metal frame, and a person can pin at least a couple targets on one at a time. And the price is right,

I have target frames made out of furring strips and PVC pipe. I write the dimensions of the cardboard on the frames so it's easy to cut to size when making replacements. I also have added a small plastic level to the top of the frame, makes it easy to get the target plumb on uneven ground. I staple my targets to the cardboard, I added a small plastic tube to the staple gun to hold extra staples. That way I don't wind up downrange with an empty stapler.

I just use a cardboard box......if it is too low then I will set it on a bucket. Stick a rock on the box and it's good to at least a 10mph wind.

Real estate sign frames work well, available at Lowe's.

Yep, have used Real Estate frames for years. If I don't want them in the ground, I weld a couple pieces of angle on the feet.
A couple pieces of thin "Z" channel screwed on and the cardboard slides in and out and no using clips.

My son outgrew his "pitchback" thingee. A metal frame with springy mesh that you throw baseball at and it springs back to you. Years ago I took mesh out, folded a piece of heavy cardboard over top rail hanging down, and just staple or tape targets to it. Been using for a long time. You can stake down with wire on windy days.

I just did the old standby PVC pipe model. Sand in the base. Works well and is easy to repair when I have kids shoot with pistols...

A metal real estate sign frame works great. Cut out a piece of cardboard that fits in the center. Put your targets on it. Replace the cardboard as needed. The legs on the stand are pointed, and push easily into most ground. Pretty light, and easy to carry. Been using one for years.

I tend to use wooden pallets, especially for longer-range target stands, partly because we get a lot of them "free", because the books we publish are shipped on pallets.
They can be cut into various sizes easily, then have "stands" made of simple 2x4s nailed or screwed to the bases.
