What's the opinion on the shortest effective barrel for a 35 Whelen?
Thanks!

Mine is 24" but I wouldn't hesitate to build one with a 22" barrel. Don't think I'd go any shorter than that.

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.
Ain’t easy havin pals.

My pre-war Sauer rebore is 25" and my old Ruger RS is 22". I personally don't see a need to go shorter than 22".

Mine was originally a 24 inch. I had it reduced to 22 in. I have been much happier with it that way. I considered a 20 inch as well as I use it for elk on our brushy coast.
I like the 22 inch well enough I plan to leave it at that. I have a 21" .375 H&H if I ever get to go to Alaska.

I have mauser 98 action bearing a 20 inch barrel and was considering a rebore to a 35 Whelan but thought that might be a bit short.

20” works fine for a Whelen. I killed a train car full of stuff with mine, it wears a 20” tube.

20" seems like it would be fine, given the case-to-barrel volume ratio. Right there with the 308. No one is going to argue that 20" is too short for a sporter 308.

I have twin mauser's miltary barrels both chopped 20, the one is lights out with 170 grain blunt noise bullets, the second one is a piece of work, i suspect that one has seen alot of use, 150 to 196 whatever u run thru it, it's about the same, probably plenty good for most applications but... I have had great success with JES on Rebore and I figured that one might be the perfect candidate, It really barks at you in 8mm, i can only imagine the bang when the 35 lets drive.

I have two 35 Whelen's.
One is a 25" Krieger with a 1 in 10 twist
Two is a 20" Krieger with a 1 in 10 twist
I i hunt the thick trees here in Colorado I carry the 20 " barrel. Easy to carry and handle in the dense trees.
Number one is built on a 1903A3 action with a Boyd's wood stock, and number two on a mid 60's Winchester push feed action in a B&C stock

They do pretty well as shot as 18" but I think the guns look better when the barrels are 21 to 24 inches. But burning 60 grains of powder is pretty easy in a bore that large. Lots of length is not needed to get full velocity.

Mine is 22 inches. I am currently working on two. One of these is a 24" while the other is a twenty inch full stock. GD

It's a VZ-24 Mauser, looks a little rough but shoots pretty good!
Still trying to shoot something with it carried it all season last year no bueno!
Got 250 Gr Hornadies and Partitions loaded for it.

Sounds like a good one. I hate when I have a new rifle and can’t get anything to cooperate with me.

I'd go 22"....or 23" at most. Just because I can't stand 24" barrels.
