Anyone have any experience with this combo? I'll run Sierra 87grainers in it. I usually use 4064 but I have a pound of 4198 I'm not using. Prefer to keep the 4064 for my Whelen. Thanks.

I think 4198 is a little fast burning for the 257
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

No data in a new Hodgdon annual, but an undated IMR guide from a while ago shows 30.5gr with Sierra 100gr Spitzer @2720fps & 44000cup. It also shows 27.5gr & a Sierra 120 @2440fps & 45000cup. That's 3gr. for 20gr more bullet weight. Starting at 31 or 32gr. with the 87s sounds logical to me, but it's not my rifle.
IMR 3031 might work better.

Having ran some 100 gr with 30 gr 4198 at about 2750 fps, I'd say it was safe enough. I was just looking for recoil reduction for the kids, but accuracy was great. 87 gr bullets should even be safer. My 100 gr deer load in the .257 is 3031...high velocity, superb accuracy.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Want some 4198 data for the 257 Roberts? http://stevespages.com/257_8_75.htmlit doesn't list it for all bullet weights, but it does for the more common bullet weights from days gone past.. but it still works fine... I use a LOT of 4198 and 4198 loads....

Thanks guys. I know the powder isn't ideal just living with what I have these days. Originally bought it for the Whelen since Barnes recommended it for their 180s. Don't shoot those anymore just 225s and 250s. Light loads for the 257 will be great since I just target shoot with it.
