I was loading some 405gr cast over some 3031 this evening and got to thinking....if you’re loading a 45-70 load with unique or universal or even Trail Boss, would you be able to prime them with Large Pistol primers?

Unlike small rifle/pistol primers which are not just the same diameter but the same height, large rifle / pistol primers are not the same height, the large pistol primers are shorter, so you might well get misfires if the firing pin either doesn't protrude deep enough or the primer isn't seated firmly and the "push" absorbs the energy. I wouldn't try it.

I assumed there’d be a difference in geometry or something of the sorts. Too many people see to use pistol powders with cast boolits to not see that crossover in recipes. Thanks TOM.

Myself, and the guys I learned from over on cast boolits like to use hotter primers on less than case filling loads of faster powders. In hopes of avoiding ringed chambers or SEE events.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Also makes perfectly good sense.
