I'd like to purchase a tang peep for my grandfather's pre-64 Winchester model 94 .32 Winchester Special. I'm looking for one that utilizes existing screw holes as I don't want to alter this family heirloom. Email works best: kdp59935gmail.com.

Thanks in advance,

KP

I recently bought a new reproduction Lyman No. 2 Tang sight for my Grandfather's 115 year old 1894 Winchester. It's finished in matt black, so it doesn't look to "new" on an old rifle. They are available, may have to search vendors. It works fantastic with my old eyes.

Does your rifle have an extra screw hole on the tang, right behind the hammer? If so, it will work with the tang peep sight. If it has two screw holes on the upper left rear side of receiver, you would need to look for a receiver peep sight like a Williams that mounts in those two holes.

If your 94 doesn't have 2 screws in the tang then you will have to have the 2nd hole drilled and tapped in order to make a tang sight work. I have a 1954 model 94 and it only had the one screw. I would love to put my Lyman #2 on this gun but I will not alter the gun in any way.

As Oldidaho stated, if you don't want to drill & tap for a 2nd tang hole then a receiver sight is the only other option.

I have a NIB #2. The holes match the tang screw holes on my rifle, it's a 1907 vintage 1894, so it should fit yours as well. $90, shipped.

Email sent.

My rifle only has a single screw in the tang at the very back. Further, the two screws on left side of the receiver are in the lower half of the receiver. I'm afraid I don't know enough about old '94's to know what this means for me. Like MPat70, I won't alter this river in any way to accommodate the desired peep.

Am I SOL?

I have a small piece of walnut that I can carve into a sight and some duct tape to attach it.

In approximately the late 1940's, IIRC, Winchester stopped drilling and tapping the extra hole on the tang for the tang peep sight on Model 94's, and started drilling and tapping two holes on the upper left side for a receiver sight. There are two small holes with plug screws. I'm not sure if there was a transition period where there were no sight holes drilled.

Unfortunately, there is at least one transition gun as you describe out there, as I own it. 1948-49 vintage as I recall. Tang has only one screw, receiver is not tapped. I have wanted to put a receiver sight on it but have been reluctant to mess up an otherwise original Winchester in great shape.

If you can't be a good example, may you at least serve as a dreadful warning

Research shows that the tang sight holes ended in 1942 when Model 94 production stopped for WWII. The left side receiver sight holes started in 1952. From 1946 to 1951, receiver sight holes were an option.
