Wondering about the differences betwixt the two. I'm an obvious corelokt fan, and am considering going round nose this year, as the pointed soft points don't seem to knock em over like they used to. Been using corelokts over 22 years now, just my opinion based on that.

John Barsness has written that the jacket of the PSP has thinned considerably over the years, while the shank section of the jacket has remained thick for the roundnose.

Corelokt, what distance to target in UP State NY. would you be hunting in timber, or open country. In Michigan, in the timber the shot's are somewhere in the 0-100yd. mark, and the round nose bullet works just fine.

I love the 117-gr RN Corelokt in my .257 Roberts,
the 180-gr RN Corelokt in my .30-06,
and the 150-gr RN Corelokt in my .270.

All shoot sub MOA and retain lots of weight.
The drop is no different than any other bullet of the same weight to 200 yards, and is actually better than some pointed bullets at 300 yards. Go figure.

The furthest I've shot is aboutish 150 yards. Do I like to know I can take a 300 yarder, well sure, but reality says 30 and under is about the norm. Bowhunting ranges, up close and personal.

Some of the quickest kills I have had on blacktail bucks within 100 yards were with rn corelokts, mostly 100 grain rn in 250 Savage. Like em alot!

I do not have any experiences with round nose Corelokts, but I have a lot of experience with the PSP version from my .30-06, 7mm Rem. mag., and 7mm-08. It is my favorite bullet in my 7mm-08.

I've had excellent results with factory 180 grain RN corelokts using a Rem 7600 carbine in .308. The most recent example was a mid-sized whitetail buck taken at range of about 85yds with a high double lung shot. The entrance wound was .308", the exit around 1.25". The deer fell upon impact and expired almost immediately. Very small loss of usable meat. No complaints. Have not used the PSP Corelokt on game so can't give you a comparison.

Those RN corlokts are favorites of the guys who use 7600's in 30/06 back here for tracking whitetails in Maine and NH. They have a reputation for smacking those big northern bucks. The Benoit family used to use them in 270 and 30/06, but I think they have gone a bit high tech now.

Well, yeah, but considering my options within the family, so to speak.

I'm a fan of my wife as well. I plan to keep using her, but I can still try new things.

I'd really like a corelokt 308 125gn round nose for some light kickin loads for my son and his 300 Savage.

Look, dude, I don't mean to tell you your business, but if she thinks you're doing her sister. . .Jeez!

But seriously. . . At the distances you're shooting the SP's should do about the same as the PSP's. If the SP's work for you, don't worry about it. The only diff I've seen was with my 7600 in 35 Whelen. I put 3 200 grain PSP's into a 200 lb buck in 2005 and he just stood there and looked at me. In 2006, I switched to 200 grain SP's and Whelenized a doe-- knocked her 70 feet down a hill. That's not enough to make definitive pronoucement, but I'm going to probably shoot SP's out of that rifle from now on.

Just load up some 150-gr RN bullets in that .308 Win with about 40.0 to 41.5 grains of H-4895 for 2,400 to 2,650 fps, depending on brass and your chamber.

In my 30-06 Ihave used the 170 grain RNCL designed for the 30-30, works real fine. I am pushing them to around 2500 fps and they hang together no problems.

I have used the Remington pointed core lokt bullets in 150 grain 30/06 and found that they as well as other brands of non premium "deer bullets" in that weight seldom would produce an exit wound on deer. Often times you find bullet and jacket fragments under the hide and in the meat on the opposite side. We are talking close shots "in the woods".....less than 100....more like 30 to 60.

A friend suggested that I either use a premium 150 like the partition or use the 180 grain roundnose core lokts. I tried the RN core lokts and like how they perform. On three deer and a pig that I killed with them, they produce a large exit hole and seem to kill just as quickly as the 150's. My personal superstition is that the large area of exposed lead helps them to open quickly. I had always been told that 180's were "too tough" for deer, but these have worked great.....they produce a much cleaner kill.

If they used to be good enough for the Benoits, they are very likely still way good enough for me!

Actually, it's not so much that the RN opens quicker, butit opens WIDER. Almost all expanding bullets start to open as soon as they hit skin, but if they open wider they create a wider wound channel, which is what kills stuff.

Be careful - she might suggest that the "double" be another guy grin
