We have pair of about 1-acre abandoned gravel pits a couple miles from town that hold water and are stocked with trout. Great place for kids to do a short bike ride and fish. Also attracts some waterfowl so Cookie went after those with her cameras yesterday.
A few cormorants about but they don't normally let one do a close approach. Sit still long enough, however, and they might do a nearby pass.
This one surfaced and had a bit of a challenge choking down its prey. Have to flip them around a bit and slide it down head first.
Also, had a Caspian tern pass through and somehow nail a fish on the wing. Gulls were immediately on the chase with hopes of a steal, but the tern stayed on the wing and went elsewhere to dine in peace. Looks to me like dinner weighs as much as the bird.
To this day, I still can not understand how a chubby bird manages to run down and nail a fish in open water.
Have a good one,
