can I get some expert advice on my two ruger number ones, I have a 308 from the days when you could not find them and a k1a in 250 savage that is a lipseys (i think) special run of 250. My question is are they guns I should shoot or are they safe queens? I bought them to shoot but now I wonder about the value verses the fun. Any advice and opinions are much appreciated thanks

Easy decision for me. Shoot ‘em.
The notion of “instant collectable” in regard to new rifles based solely on limited production numbers is silly to me. I suspect a lot of Number 1s are dreamed up by Ruger to appeal to collectors who want one of each. Some of them turn out to be the answer to someone’s idea of the perfect configuration. That K1a is like that for me, as is the same one in .30/30. If I had either, they’d get shot plenty, and bloodied!
As always, your dough, do what makes you happy. Nice snags.
What fresh Hell is this?

I have a K1a from Lipsey's in 250 Savage. I shoot it. It's a very accurate rifle but looks like it was stocked from a recycled fence post. Someday it will get new wood.

I had a 4 digit that was hunted by prev owner. Decent stick on it, ended up selling. Took it to the woods a couple times.
Shot OK too.
Just wish they made a #1 in the config I wanted. Neat rifles.

I have a 1B in .308 that was offered to me at a really good price by someone who knew I wanted a No. 1. I use it frequently, shot my last couple of deer with it. I always thought it an odd cartridge to put in a falling block with no length constraints...I mean, why not a .30-06? Look at some of the goofy choices Ruger has put in No. 1’s, they can only be intended for the “instant collector item” market.
I have no use for safe queens. Certainly to each his own, but I have never seen a gun of any kind as an investment.

I have no use for safe queens. Certainly to each his own, but I have never seen a gun of any kind as an investment. One person's goofy is another person';s passion. I have two No1, 45/70 and 450/400. I could say, any No1 without a rimed ctg was a bad choice. That leaves 30/30 as the only No1,. 30cal deer rifle that would interest me. But; if I was setup to load for 30/40 then that would be fine. Ruger did both. Now goofy? If I had a 300H&H rimed magnum, I would be all over a companion No1 in the same caliber. But; I dont - so that would be goofy to me. My first deer rifle was a 30-06. Can I say, to much gun? On the other hand, as years go by, it seems to me the cartridge is not all that important. It is good sport to debate. If I put on my honesty hat, well I wont. Too much fun.

I have a custom #1 in 300 H&H as I couldn't find one any other way and besides I like nice wood so it was a no brainer. I also have a factory 450/400 and it's a wonderful caliber. I have worked up a nice light load for it and used it to take a deer last year. Now if you really want goofy another custom #1 is in the works in a classic deer caliber the 300 Savage. If that doesn't say LOONEY nothing else will.
