Not if you buy a decent one.

I have 2 Napa Ultrapro x18K, one @ home & 1 at work in my shop, where it is used daily, particularly in winter.

It has enough juice to start a diesel in -30*C.

Retails at about $300.

I bought a JNC660 about 6 years ago and never had a problem. Recharge it after every use and had it sitting for a few months without it losing charge. Turns over the Case 580b, Massey Ferguson 135 no problem. Carry it in the boat as a backup.

They are a relatively new item.
I'm not. Only 4 cars/3 drivers and a lawnmower to start.
Not much to go wrong, used enough to keep charged.
If they won't start, the cars have jumpers or I grab a charger.

Car dealers are where I first saw them. Makes sense.

If we had one, keeping it charged would be more bother than
jumping a car every few years, or just hopping in a different one.

Lots of them explode. Lithium fires are nothing to sneeze at. A regular fire extinguisher often will not put them out.

I have another charger that has let me downa couple of times in the past.

Our NOCO's never have.

We like them enough they went out as Christmas presents to the kids. We put them in plastic ammo boxes with a set of rechargeable GMRS Radios and rechargeable PETZL headlamps. there are cables to fit our phones too.

I’ll bet the young man asking everybody at the gas station yesterday if they had jumper cables thought the same thing.
Bought one for my daughter a few years ago just so she wouldn’t have to do exactly that. Dave

I have a NOCO GB 40. Had to jump a Lexus once and it worked great.
Three months later I tried it again and it didn't work at all. The machine showed that it had a full charge. Had to get out the old jumper cables to start that car.
I gotta get that NOCO out tomorrow and test it and see if it has conked out on me.

However, when that NOCO works it is great.
I saw a video on youtube, the guy was up in Yankeeland at 15 degrees, kind of a junk yard with older vehicles that had been setting out there for six or eight months, 12 inches of snow on the vehicles. Very difficult conditions to jump an old car.

The NOCO GB 40 was up to the task he jumped six cars in a row and was headed to number seven and I turned it off. Very impressive performance.

Tell you what I will test the little NOCO out tomorrow and see if it has conked out on me.

Bought the cheap one from Harbor Freight. Went to the deer lease more than once and found my Jeep with a dead battery.

I've had a DSR for about a year now and haven't hooked it to anything it wouldn't crank. A Perkins diesel in the dead of winter can be a biotch to crank but the cows don't care lol. Its the pro series and I've been more than pleased.

A Suaoki Model T10 (12000mAh) has jump started my 4.0L Ford Ranger and Toyota 4Runner with the battery cables completely disconnected from the battery.

It’s also smoked my John Deere Lawn Tractor headlight cables.... crazy

I've got two - don't know what one is off-hand.

It will jump-start, air compressor (used it yesterday to inflate a trailer spare), USB port. don't know about a light.

It's a bit bigger and lots heavier than a 4 place toaster.....

I also have an XP10. It is compact - roughly 10x5x2 inches. It will supposedly jump my Cummins diesel, has a light, and will charge numerous electronics, including iPhones, computers, etc. I bought it to carry inside my parka when we were in the Arctic, and we had a hair-on- fire snow machine without pull-start capability. In case we were out in the boonies without a paddle......

They do need to be kept charged up, and, preferably, warm to work reliability to full capacity.

First of every month, I charge both, several other batteries, start and run idle machinery, and do some other stuff- like a bacteria boost into the septic system. Make it into a routine to do those things on a schedule.

I was thinking about getting one for the boat. Might not be a good idea with exposed gas tanks.

That belongs in the book of essential truths.

I've had the GB40 since 2018, but the only car that I have started with it was the neighbor's Honda CRV. Other than that, I've used it to charge my phone.
