My oldest daughter was home last weekend for Mothers day,she brought her boyfriend along, nice enough kid so far.We have a family wedding to go to in North Carolina in June,we were discussing how we were all going to drive down from N.Y..The boyfriend said his father had bought him a car,a ,"Salvage Title",Mini Cooper ,that he is fixing up to give to him,and THAT is what he 's driving my daughter to N.C. in. I told both of them they were nuts, from what i've heard ,a Mini Cooper is not a good car,and buying a wreck out of a junk yard for anything other than parts is just insane. The boyfriend said his father has had "good luck " buying these salvage cars and fixing them up.I don t want my daughter in this thing,A salvage title means the car could have been totaled,in a flood,or hail damage,i don t know..Who knows? Does anyone know anything about these Mini Coopers ? I want to find out about these cars before i have a serious talk with them.

They are pretty well known for poor reliability. I recall a Car and Driver long term test of one and it was at the dealer 14 times. You can probably find the article online as well as other related info.

A retired Marine buddy of mine drives one.....but he lives in Venice, Italy. Probably a sensible car for his world.
No way in hell I'd want to be jockeying one of those on I-95, or any other busy American interstate freeway.
Add the fact that it's a wreck/salvage.....that's a hard pass for me. It's what I would consider a deathtrap.

You said he seems like a good kid. If you’re that concerned with the car his dad provided for him maybe you can buy him a different car so you’ll feel better about the whole situation.
She never made it past the bedroom door, what was she aiming for...? She's gone shootin..

I know a guy that drives his 68 miles to work, five days a week. That 136 miles a day, round trip! He said he goes through three sets of tires a year. The road he drives is a winding country road, called Greenspring! Aka hwy 66. I have never heard him complain about reliability!

Read the older ones used oil bad. Buddy has had a couple. Said they are a blast to drive . Like a skateboard for grownups.
Ill.proly buy a newer stick shift model For me and my youngest to rip around in
Safer than a bike
Have a couple Jeeps so no need for a Countryman. Just 2 door stick is what we will get.

A guy that works with me bought one for his wife. Sold it a little while later because it rode so rough, it hurt her neck and back. She had some prior neck/back issues though.

Girl at work bought a used one. Low mileage. Didn’t make it home before some catastrophic failure of a major component. I forget what. Dealership took it back.
I wouldn’t be worried about a salvage title myself. I drive one as a commuter right now, 2001 Civic. Bought with 100k. Has 300k now. Clutch went out this week though, transmission laying in shop floor now waiting on parts. It’s not prefect by any means, but it was cheap and is still cheap transportation.

There were a lot of them on the road when they first came out but you hardly see them around here anymore. That should tell you something right there.

I understand you not wanting your daughter riding in it down the highway.
But not the kids fault, He is being taught by his father, and learning the hard way is the best way.

The had a lot of the original minis when I lived in South Africa. I hated them because just when you thought you had found a parking spot it turned out there was a mini in it.

The oil consumption pre 2014 was reportedly so bad one could starve it within a month .
Folks buying one used.....who knows how many close calls its had.

Certainly a paragon of safety and prob’ly reliability too compared to the stuff young folks drove fifty years back (I myself drove a ‘64 VeeDub Microbus ). If your daughter is of age(and sounds like she is) she’s prob’ly gonna do whatever she wants.

By the way this is an adult daughter problem, not a dad problem.
Having said that, I’d get him a Tundra. They’re great trucks.
