There are some calibers that just plain work with good ol' cup and core bullets. Here's a few from my experience:
30-30 .32 Win. Sp. .358 Winchester
I'm sure there are more.

.270 Winchester - it's long had the advantage of having most every .277 bullet specifically tailored to it's velocity range.
Have only shot a few .270 Hornady Interlocks into deer, but they all held together and mostly ended up just under the far skin mushroomed out into big buttons.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

22 Hornet comes to mind that is if you load it like a 22 hornet and not try to make it a 222 or 223. Come to think of it the 222 223 and 22-250 dose pretty good for what they were indended to do. Come to think of it the 22 Long Rifle has been doing it a few million shots per week since the 1890's or earlier. 9.3 x62 and the rimmed version. a whole bunch of Nitro Express cartridges such as the 470 416 Rigby and the list goes on . keep the bullet running at 2800 fps or there abouts and its not much of an issue, It becomes a problem when you what to send a 180 Hornaday SP out the barrel at 3400 fps or better and then expect it to hold together when it hits meat at 40 yards.

After shooting/witnessing a bunch of deer/antelope killed with Hornady interlocks out a 270. I can remember recovering only four while doing the processing. I honestly have no idea the actual numbers, but it has been a bunch. I should sit down and try to remember actual numbers, but there's no way, after 28 years of hunting. These were 130gr SP and 140gr BTSP. And two of those were the 140gr BTSP from a reduced loads for my nephews.

I think you are exactly right.

Anything with a muzzle velocity in the 2200 to 2700fps range. I'll go along with the 270 for the reason given. GD

What greydog said +1 ...and why I don't shoot the 300Winnie at anything I want to eat at under 200 yards especially using 165 gr'ers and lighter C&C bullets unless they are down loaded to '06/308 MV speeds. Really looking forward to "hotrodding" the 9.3 Mouser to see if I can get it over 24-2500+ MV's in some 250/270gr NBT/AB's & Speer stuff before moving to the premium's. Ron

The 260 and 6.5x55 have to be as good as any cartridge with cheap, cup & core bullets due to the heavy-for-caliber bullet weight options.

Guess it depends on the bullet's components and how they're put together.

I have a .30-30 that shoots Speer C&C's just fine. But I load Nosler PArtition RN's for it, too.
My .308 Win and .30-06 are good candidates for C&C's but I use premiums in the .308 and plan to do so as well with the .30-06 (have only loaded the .30-06 with A-MAX for target loads so far).
Coyote Hunter - NRA Patriot Life, NRA Whittington Center Life, GOA, DAD - and I VOTE!
No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.
