I'd look hard at the 6x62mm Freres. Its the 9.3x62 necked down, and looks like a .243 on steriods. It has more case capacity than the 240 Wby, and I loaded mine with cheap 243 win dies, as the neck and shoulder are almost the same as the .243, but it's close to 0.5" longer. Worth a thought.

You do not n e e d a 6mm. Question is do you want one? Surly nothing wrong with a 6mm. I started off with a 6mm Remington with 100 grain bullets and was satisfied to say the least. Then I tried 30-06, 270 Win & 7mm mag. lately I have been shooting 6.5 Grendel & this fall I intend on shooting a bolt action 6mm ARC. Lots of good choices out there. Suit yourself with what you please.

Fellas I have a Win 70 XTR (push feed) in 6.5x55 and I'm addressing the bolt, brass head, etc.
The only problem I've encountered is in 'some' brands the 6.5X55 brass 'needs' an RCBS # 2 shell holder for the press.
Can't recall now but 'some' brass will fit a # 3 but what I'm using now requires a # 2.
And yes, you're right Filaman that M 70 action is NOT limited to OLD pressure limits. So far the only bullet I've pushed is the 120 NBT and 3000 fps gives me NO trouble.
Good Luck
Jerry

Jerry Oh I know Jwall My Push Feed M-70 is chambered in .270 and I shoot a pretty healthy load of 130 grain bullet over 56.7 grains of IMR 4831 which scares the hell out of 3100 FPS in a 22" barrel. I'm thinking of building a 6.5x55 on a Yugo 24/47 action. But yeah If I had a spare push feed M-70 action I wouldn't think twice about chambering it in 6.5x55.

I think 6mm (whether it be CM, .243, or 6mmRem) is an ideal long range varmint cartridge. Small enough bore that there's good varmint bullets, and enough case to drive them a long ways.
