I picked up this 1956 Model 70 Featherweight from a pawnshop this week that has a bare receiver finish mostly above the stock line. Not sure if it was done on purpose or accidently but was wondering if there were any DIY finish options that somewhat resembled the original finish out there?...or perhaps someone that you could recommend to do the recv. refinish and barrel blue touch up? This will be a shooter so it doesn't have to be perfect, just reasonably priced.

No idea what caused that. Is that pitting on the receiver?

I was thinking it was light surface rust. I cleaned it up some with 0000 steel wool and fine oil and I don't see or feel any pitting now. Kind of wondering if this light surface rust was on their when the original finish was intact and after somebody removed the finish, and then me cleaning up the rust, the black spots are remnants of the original finish.

Looks like someone put some blue and rust remover on that receiver maybe not understanding what it would do. Here is a little info from the Winchester collector site https://winchestercollector.org/forum/general-discussions-questions/model-70s-and-54s/page-3/

Milwroad,

Thank you for the link, it was helpful and I'll now I'll have to find someone to refinish it. Anyone have any recommendations on who could do a decent du-lite refinish job on it?

I think I might consider birdsong or cerakote on that one.

Poor thing. I hope you didn't pay much for it.

No I don't think so, paid just over $400 and found someone to refinish it with du-lite for $140.

I would've hand polished it to 320x or 400x and rust blued it myself. Easy as heck and doesn't require a lot of noxious chemicals, and is very durable (and looks good too).

Man, I wished I could find one of those for 400 bucks.

That’ll look great refinished. Great snag.

Thanks...George Roghaar out of Boca Raton, FL did it. He has a bit of a backlog, but his work is top notch and his prices are almost impossible to beat.

That really turned out well.
