What on earth made ruger call the ruger semi-auto rifle a "ranch" rifle? Most ranchers I have been around carry NEF or savages as truck guns...any ideas?

The only difference was ability to mount a scope, so I guess that is why.

Because marketing decided that being truthfull, and naming it "Inaccurate Overpriced Piece of Junk Rifle" would not be good for sales.

Maybe Ruger figured that they wouldn't sell too many of them labeled "Raunchy Rifle", so they called them a "Ranch Rifle" instead. MI VHNTR

I think it might have been an attempt by Ruger to distance itself from the first "Assault Weapon" Ban. Just speculation on my part.

Never could justify one for hogs or coyotes. I prefer an accurate bolt if I need to reach out and touch something. The .243 ADL or Stevens makes an excellent knock around rifle.

I bought one about seven years ago for yote calling. My theory at the time was it would be handy for handling the packs of teenage dogs that come running in all stoopid like. I liked the included rings and angle eject (a mauser like system vs. the bolt face M700 style), but by the time I mounted a scope the ballance was shot all to hell and I never got the thing to group well enough to get excited.
Shoulda bought the ADL in .243 sitting next to in on dealer's shelf. Live and learn.....

I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

I'm a rancher and I have carried one off and on for over 25 years. Supposedly, the "ranch" moniker was to suggest that it was easy to carry in a truck -- that, plus the scope design. I like mine, but I must confess that my "beater" gun is presently a NEF Handi-Rifle. In fact, it's a youth model .243. Very compact and easy to carry but shoots fine for all I need it to do and much more simple and easy to care for than a Mini-14.

There is often no explaining what Marketing types do except to explain it away as wishfull thinking.
My older bro and I went out shooting p-dogs back in the 80's. He was shooting his .22-250 while I shot his two Ruger .223 Ranch Rifles. Neither one was worth the ammo. While I like the design in theory, I've never been interested in laying down cash for one because of that experience.

If I can't pop a Pdog every time at 150 yards I don't want the thing in the truck. I've had two brand new Ranch Rifles and couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with either. No thanks.

I have the mini-30 variant, seems to shoot well. I cannot believe they're getting $650 for a new Mini-14!!! For that money I'd boot up the extry cash and get an AR.

Mr. POP: Well at least I feel better now after reading about my fellow shooters successes with Mini-Ranch rifles. A friend brought one to me one time to see if I could make it shoot. Out of the box, with a Leupold 2-7 mounted, off a bench it would not hold groups much less than 6-7 at 100yds! With ammo it didnt like, you couldnt hit my hat consistently at that range. Small guy-but big hat! I studied on it some, bedded the recoil lug, the action, tuned the trigger, did everything but sacrifice a chicken under a full moon. Im less than ecstatic to let you all know that all that resulted in 4 groups.sometimes. Im really liking the theory about ranch size groups, as its easier on my feelings! Thanks all. Dwayne

AGREED. That's the market Ruger sought. That's the market Ruger gets. They make $$$$ on it. People buy them, shoot them at tin cans, and have fun. Other people buy them, put on black everything, and stroke themselves as tehy rea soldier of fortune. Whatever . . . . RUger makes them to make $$, not to make rifle loonies happy. Only Rifle loonies and hunters begrudge the MIni-14 its success. BMT

Dwayne I have tried so many times to make them shoot (for my friends) and I never, ever broke 4 MOA no matter what I did.

I own one. Got it in a trade for a boat 16 yrs ago. Stainless Ranch, Haven't used it a lot, but did check the accuracy and found mine to be in the 1-1.5" range at 100 yards. Probably have around 800 to 1000 rounds total through it. After reading all the reports of poor accuracy through the years, I realize I got lucky.
Why Ranch Rifle: I think they're about the same size and weight as most rifles toted about the typical ranch. Just a handy, small rifle.

I still say most of the folks that claim to have owned a Mini-14, and found them to be wildly inaccurate have not really owned and shot one. I have a Series 188 Ranch Rifle now, and with the EOTech 511, it turns in 2 inch groups or less all day long. The two other Mini-14 I owned were also good shooters. At the rifle range, most of the fellows shooting minis are turning in groups as good as most of the AR guys.

how bout this new one? mini 14 target? adjustable harmonic dampener?
I saw an ad, a full page ad in shooting times that reads: "if it starts shooting like your 20 year old mini 14, don't panic. Simply adjust the harmonic dampener for minute-of-angle accuracy, and you're golden." that's right on Ruger's ad, they wrote it....
How do I interpret that statement????
As a consumer, how do I interpret that? What does it say to me?
It confuses me, does it say all 14's up till now are junk, we know it but this one is cool, don't sweat it?
um...., little help here?
Dave

Bought one of the stainless models about ten years ago and put a silver (?) scope on it. I shot it, shot it some more with Black Hills Match ammo, carried it in the truck for a few years, shot a lot of "stuff", still have it and it looks and works excellent. I think I'll go shoot it again and if I agree with the naysayers I'll take it to a gun show and probably make some money on it. Unless somebody here forces me to sell it to them. If you don't like 'em don't offer.
