A friend of mine recently bought a new rifle. It is a SIG SHR 970 in 7mm Rem. The rifle is blued and has a synthetic stock. The rifle is in ecellent condition and came with ring, mounts and a 4x14x40 Weaver scope if I remember correctly.
I have seen very few of these rifles and have no idea on the approximate value. He gave 600 including the scope. Did he get a deal or should he have a sore rump from getting screwed?
How do these rifle shoot? Fit and finish? Is the stock a possible aftermarket or was this probably a factory item? He has not found any marks on it (stock) to indicate one way or the other.
Inquiring minds want to know. Any info is appreciated.
Thanks.

I would say that he got a good deal. I orginally paid $495 for mine in .30-06 about 5-6 years ago. It was NIB. This rifle is no longer inported by SIG and extra mags are hard to find, though CDNN may still have some. IIRC the rifle now sells for about 1400 EURO in Europe. I added barrels in .25-06. .280 Rem, and 9.3X62 when SIG still had them. My rifle is accurate and I have had no problems with it. It also came with a factory synthetic stock so I would suspect that your friend's rifle has an original factory also. IMO he should be well pleased with his purchase.

As TreeFarmer said, they now sell for over $1,500 US new. They listed for $600 new in 1999. I bought one for $425.00 and added a barrel for $160.00 before they went to $600. It is made by Sauer, and is to the 202 what the T3 is to the Sako 75. The 202 is a heavier rifle, but the barrel is thinner. The metal is coated in Iaflon, like Teflon, that is used on expensive cookware. The bore is chromed, bolt is stainless steel.
Mine shoots unGodly small groups. I was at the range testing various loads when some engineers from a firearms company rolled up with police rifles to test at long range. Two of them were former M-40 USMC shooters. They could not believe the groups.
The STR is the military rifle used by some NATO forces. It has a stock that appears to be McMillan. M-40 accuracy for a fraction of the price and less weight.
Tell your friend if he wants a .300 Win Mag barrel cheap to PM me. He might need it if he ever shoots out that 7mm.

I think CDNN has the walnut stocks for $35 if he should want one. I have both for mine. I have the 270 and 30-06 barrels and am still looking for a 280 barrel.
I've not fired mine but after researching the forums I didn't find anyone with anything bad to say about them.

I ran across a .280 barrel a few weeks ago. I will try to find it. I have never talked to any SHR-970 owner who had ever shot less than 1 MOA. Another good thing is that when you break it down, it fits into a Boyt 2-barrel shotgun soft case, and will fit into a large suitcase.

Roadhog - I forgot to answer your question about the synthetic stock. It is a factory stock. I know of no aftermarket ones. It should have the SIG logo on the grip.
