I don't think the can had power in it originally. Someone put some work in it. Nice to see the seller call it for what it is.
Scanning and printing color photos is easy now but I don't know about in the 80's.

And it says from May of 1976. I'm thinking more like May 1919 and the 76 is a lot number or something. Or, as Rick said, it had nothing to do with gunpowder. Savage stopped selling ammo in 1963. I'm sure they weren't selling black powder in tin cans in 1976.

The wrap is copied from an envelope from the early 1900's with a hardware company name on it, here's one from 1904 from the same company - Savage Envelope I could not find anything on the company but I think they were long gone by the date on the can. The logo on the top is from much later (very late 30's?) and the cover partially covers the writing on the wrap, not something I think would be done by Savage. I would not think any company would put powder in a can like this, especially black powder, the cover does not look like it's held on very securely, it appears just to snap on with a couple dimples in the rim of the cover. So I have to say it's not a reproduction of any original item, - Added, by not a reproduction I do not mean it's original, just a modern made up item to look vintage that is not based on any original item.

Mike, I have not seen another like this one.
I have seen no indication than Savage ever sold black powder and there is no grade of powder listed .
