A friend of mine moved out of an old house in Madison WI, and we dragged this out of the basement. That was more than 20 years ago. I'm more inclined to think it's a canon ball. I've read that they'd attach chains and sometimes put a chain between 2 balls. They were intended to spin and take out stuff like ships' masts. That ball spinning with the chain attached would be something you'd prefer to avoid.

I don’t know if it’s real or not but I burned the snot out of my 5 year old hands on one in a ghost town somewhere out west in1955. It had been sitting in the hot sun on a 100 degree day and I tried to move it. Yeow!
