A buddy had some reloaded 338 WM ammo that wouldn’t chamber in his rifle so I told him I’d take it apart and resize the brass and put it back together. When I pulled the bullets which are 210 grain partitions, the powder only weighed 50 grains in each round. It looks similar to H4831SC in size and shape and kind of has a slight greenish hue.

Could this be a legitimate load? All my load data starts well over 50 grains with 210’s in the 338 win mag..... any ideas what this load could be??

I’m tempted to just dump the powder and load them up with 4350 or R19, but this one has me stumped...

Just dump the powder and start over. Make sure all the powder is out of the case too. Did you look into the case to make sure there wasn't still powder left in there? At any rate, if you don't know what powder it is, use it as lawn fertilizer. Re-size the brass, trim to length, chamfer inside and outside of the case mouth. Etc. etc.. Start over, and make it right..

Yea, I’m sure that’s what I’ll end up doing, but I’m just curious wtf that load was!

I am thinking a hand load...I'd make an educated guess of H 322....50 grains would work in a 338 Mag.

Definitely a reduced recoil load.... another possible powder, IMR 4198.

Compare both of those loads for a 240 grain bullet in a 444 Marlin....

I use to do that developing reduced loads for the 338 Win Mag, until I put together a 338/06.

case capacity for a 444 is a little less with that kind of powder burn rate, as compared to a 338 WM.

I’d start over. I would never shoot another’s hand loads.

I’ve only got one friend who’s reloads I would trust.
But he’s the fellow that taught me how to reload.

Greenish? Could it be Varget? At any rate I too would commit it to the lawn and start over with something else.

I make it a rule not to load for anyone else. The last thing I need is for some clod to trip and stuff his bbl full of mud and fire one of my loads.

Thanks for the opines and the warnings. My hunting pard has been shooting my reloads (these were not my reloads)for a long time and he’s not the lawyerly type. Not reloading for others is sound legal advice nonetheless. I’m gonna dump the powder and fix em up proper like so he can commence to moose killin
