I just found out that around October 6th, a 60+ year old California hunter was accidentally shot by his son as they were passing rifles to each other as they made a steep climb.

A very sad thing for the family.....especially the son! memtb

Memtb: Dang - that is a tragedy that will be "ongoing" for those involved and family.
May that Hunter rest in peace.
Sad.

That's terrible and tragic.

I hunted unit 45 last fall and there are many steep places where I wouldn't want to shoot anything.

Yep. Had a cousin that shot himself in the neck when I was a kid.
He was crossing a fence with a loaded single shot shotgun, while bird hunting.

shame. hunting alone. Round in chamber ok on level ground. Climbing, thick brush, rough uneven ground. No round in chamber. . Loaded firearm ( long gun) never goes in vehicle or rests on vehicle or fence post ground etc. action is open

Hunting with others .No round in chamber until actual shot. No shot remove round immediately. Walk up to downed animal, no round in chamber. Finger never touches trigger until shot. Your firearm has a death laser coming out of barrel at all times . Any living thing it touches dies. No round in chamber moving.

Yep, had exactly the same thing happen when I was a kid in rural north Arkansas, when I was about 12 years old ... a long time ago. Two brothers I knew were hunting quail when they needed to cross a barbed wire fence. One brother was already over the wire and on the other side of the fence. His brother started to hand him his shotgun before crossing, obviously with his finger in the trigger guard. The twelve gauge went off.

His brother had to have his leg amputated above his knee. The kid shooter, never got over the guilt trip.

The story doesn’t make clear that his son shot him, at least to me.

Seems the older hunter must have been handing the rifle butt first up to his son. Seems like the perfect time to make sure of an empty chamber. Could have been a Remington.........

You never had an animal get up when you got close? I would never approach a downed animal with an empty chamber.
