I have Winchester 1873 that was gifted to my dad when he was in his early 20's. He's 77 now. He foolishly re-blued the rifle soon after. It's sat in his closet since then. I'd like to sell it and have no idea how to value it and looking for help. It's in 38 WCF and has a 24" barrel. SN is 61256xx. Wood is in nice shape and is pretty. Has some minor cracks here and there but nothing that looks compromising. The re-blue has some freckles here and there. I've never shot it and don't think he has either. But it functions flawlessly and feels tight.

Is this worth my time to try and sell or should I just hang it on the wall? I can take some pics and share here if selling is a good option.

Thanks. Wyattd

It's worth something, even in it's "violated" state. Post some pictures to get better opinions. My WAG would be $500 -$1000 depending on how pretty it is. Personal I'd probably hang on to it since it has some family history.

Yeah it's been fooled with, but with what your asking, and you really,
don't have anything into it.
There getting a pretty good buck, even the way yours is.
I would list it, on Gun broker,Guns International, etc............
Naturally, be Honest with your listing, and I'm sure you'll be surprised,
how much it will bring!
I'd even start the Auction out Low, like .01, or even$1.00 !
There's a lot of guy's out there looking for a shooter, or even a low priced 73 like you have,
To send off to Turnbull, for a Complete accurate Restoration.
Good Luck!

If it were my rifle with family provenance, I would not get rid of it. You will regret doing such later. No matter its present state! But it’s your rifle and naturally you may do as you please. JMHO. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜Š

I do agree with your perspective!

Let me contradict myself, as I really wasn't taking in to account, the possibility of you possibly
hanging on to it, because it was your Fathers!

If you Don't need the Money, it's still a "73" Winchester!
So what if your Dad refinished it!

Hang it on the Wall and Enjoy it!

I don't need the money. But, then again I could turn the money into something I might not normally treat myself to. Dad never used this gun. It sat in the closet for 50+ years. He has guns that he's hunted with that will mean a lot more to me someday if I inherit.

So I think it will be a win win if I find someone that will indeed enjoy the rifle.

I am guessing you meant 61256x

That would be 1902 manufacture.

I got this 1873 win 44-40 in 2015 for $750. It was made in 1886. That was private sale from the great great grandson of the original owner.
