David, what barrel length are you running? I've got a 1000 TNTs, and I'm debating picking up a hamr barrel. Either that, or SBRing my AR10 and going 12.5.
Right now the AR10 SBR is winning, since I'v got a couple thousand pieces of 308 brass and over 30 pounds of H335, but on the other hand I've got a couple "pistol" lowers ready to roll, so the lack of paperwork/engraving is making this hard.
Purpose is deer/hog/bad guy capable rig around 20" with a long suppressor.
ALL TESTING WAS DONE WITH THE SAME BARREL PROGRESSIVELY SHORTENED FOR NO BARREL TO BARREL VARIATION AND ALL AMMO FOR EACH LOAD FROM THE SAME LOT. ALSO ALL SHOOTING WAS DONE DURING A 5 HOUR PERIOD ON THE SAME DAY USING A LABRADAR TO MINIMIZE THE EFFECT OF ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS. ALL CHRONOGRAPH STRINGS WERE 10 SHOTS WITH THE HIGH AND LOW SHOT REMOVED FOR AN AVERAGE OF THE REMAINING 8 SHOTS.
AS YOU CAN SEE AS THE BULLET WEIGHT WENT UP BARREL LENGTH HAD LESS EFFECT ON VELOCITY. AVERAGING THE 16.25 TO 20 NUMBERS IT WORKS OUT TO 10.5 FPS PER INCH.
not sure how they addressed the gas tube length as the barrell was progressively shortened.
I think once you cut the 308 down to 12.5", you're getting to near HAMR velocities anyway, and the HAMR is more efficient at that barrel length?
Not sure what velocity a 12.5" 308 gets, but @djones' post above shows the comparable HAMR velocities.
