I have a 1960's vintage Sako Vixen in 222. It has the Bofors barrel which I know adds a little panache/collectability to the rifle itself. It has the original flat bottom triangular forearm and that Bofors barrel is, oh, about an inch in diameter. Its heavy as can be.

My question is do you know anyone who makes a fiberglass stock for this rifle? I'm looking for a sporter type stock, not a benchrest stock. My plans are to rebarrel the rifle back to 222 but with a slimmer profile barrel and stock. I understand that the Sako purists (I'm one too) would scream and holler about this but the barrel is shot out to pieces and is very pitted. The previous owner had run thousands of hot loads through the rifle and it shows. I got his reloads in the deal. Pulling the bullets and guessing at the loads would give you chills. I've worked up loads for it and its just "not there" with what a 222 should be shooting. After looking through the barrel with a borescope I understand why.

I have contacted McMillian and they said "Nope". Manners? Nope.....

My gunsmith buddy has suggested that I obtain a blank stock and let him inlet it himself, which he's more than capable of doing.

Buy a flat top stock of your liking from manners or McMillan and let your buddy inlet it for you.

McMillan had a handful of flat tops listed in their gunsmith specials section.

Look at Stocky Stocks for Sako stocks or call them.

That’s what I was going to say. Then you can get about anything you want.

I'd have it rebarreled with a contour to suit the stock and have the barrel heavily fluted to take some weight out.

I think I'd just run the gap, nothing wrong with a nice float assuming the contour lines match. Or flute like was posted above...^

The easy button is reuse the stock. Fill barrel channel with appropriately colored bedding. Float by taping barrel lengthwise when you assemble to let bedding cure.

McMillan used to make them, I have three. None for sale.
Surprised they don’t still make them.

It won’t be inletted for the Vixen though. Having my gunsmith inlet it is my last resort, even though he’s more than qualified.

With such a nice rare rifle, I would just rebarrel it to the original barrel contour.

There are plenty of used Lite/Hunter barrel Sako 461 out there..

Call JB at Accu-Flite. He knows all things Sako and has stocked the L-46 in fiberglass.
