Stuff like this leaves me shaking my head and feeling sick. There is no excuse to mistake a Whooping Crane with anything else. Rewards offered for helping catch the cowards, I refuse to call them hunters. https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/OKDWC/bulletins/300e9a1

That sucks. I hope the criminals are caught and get maximum penalties with time served being consecutive rather than concurrent.
I've seen whoopers in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Texas. There were a couple of times Sandhills crane hunting plans were changed as whoopers were hanging out near the edge of the refuge in our direction.

Super bad deal, I hope the miscreants are caught and punished.

I know an inexperienced hunter who shot one by accident on a corporate boondoggle. He turned himself in. It cost him a good amount of money, I want to say around $100K, but I think he was glad to just avoid prison. If memory serves, a real serious group of FBI agents showed up at his house a couple of days later while he was at work and really scared his wife,

The last time that bear ate a lawyer he had the runs for 33 days!

Was elk hunting in BC and in a meadow in the mountains I saw a pair, absolutely incredible, beautiful and HUGE! To be honest I did not know what there were and had to look it up when I got home.
With only approximately 440 in the wild today, I consider myself very fortunate to have seen them. Can't believe someone would shoot them, no mistaking them unless you are a moron.
GOOGLE:
In 1941 there were only 21 Whooping Cranes left: 15 were migrants between Canada and Texas while the rest lived year-round in Louisiana. The Louisiana population went extinct, and all 600 of today’s Whooping Cranes (about 440 in the wild and 160 in captivity) are descended from the small flock that breeds in Texas.
