I know there was a 6.5x54 MS article in a Hodgdon hanloading annual a couple of years back. I am not sure who wrote it.

Think I found it.......In the Feb. 1991 issue of GUNS & AMMO. Ross was the shooting editor at the time and did an article entitled; " 6.5 It Does It All" and according to Ross, "There are no better medium bore cartridges than the dynamic duo of the 6.6x54mm Mannlicher and 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser". He was hunting in Alaska with a Model 1903 Mannlicher-Schonauer in 6.5x54 and also helping his friend Tom Rigden build a new hunting camp in return for some hunting opportunities. It's a good article and he covers both the 6.5x54 and 6.5x55 quite well. That was the article that sparked my interest in the 6.5x55 and I knew I had a copy of that issue around here. Didn't get a chance to dig it out until tonight. Sure seems like the article you mentioned.

Wait a minute...... Ross didn't have a Man Bun back then. Whats a guy to think if he says stuff like that.
I used to only shoot shotguns and rimfires, then I made the mistake of getting a subscription to handloader.......

Wait, Ross and a man bun? I would have to see it, and then I probably would not believe it.

Not sure how to do this, I have a PDF of the article. Posting a link. 6.5 Does It All
Got it covered with the 22 LR, 30-06, and 12 gauge. The rest are just for fun. NRA Life Member Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

That article actually started my love affair with short barreled rifles. I started with a crude M96. As I posted in another thread, my M96 had a 19” barrel and was a military rifle that someone sporterized very poorly. On its best day, it would do 2” groups at 100 yards. I started my kids on it years ago hunting from deer stands in the South Carolina low country. For some reason it liked IMR 3031 and Sierra 120gr the best at around 2350 FPS according to my chronograph. Killed well at 50 to 80 yards.
Looking back, it was probably 1992 deer season in South Carolina when we started using that rifle.
Since then I have owned several shorties but never the 6.5 MS. Recently won a bid on Gun Broker for a Ruger RSI in 6.5 Creedmoor. Going to pick it up tomorrow. My goal with it is to get 6.5 MS performance, not try to stretch its short barrel.

He must look at all the accolades the 6.5 Creedmoor gets and thinks, I've been telling people for years to try a 6.5.

Short Rifle...I don't think your 120/3031 load is a fluke or a 1 rifle load. It has worked for too many '96's to be just a lucky load. Also works well in Norwegian Krags. Started my kids on that load, neighbors kids and soon my grandkids.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.
