Looking for recommendations for an optic for a quick handling woods gun. I have a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem. Need a quick handling optic 5 - 100 yards range. What would be your suggestions? I was contemplating a Leupold 2-7x33 with a heavy duplex reticle.

2x7 would be fine, 1x6 would be good as well
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

Mine has a 2-7 Leupold, the 2-7 is an excellent choice.
My 375 Win has a 1-4 on it, also a great choice.
When I die I hope I don't start voting democrat.

I’d be inclined to find a steel tube Weaver 1.5x post and crosshair.
Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.

Nothing wrong with 2-7 or 2-8 Don’t forget to look at LVPO with standard duplex.
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

You stand hunting? A 2x7 as recommended. Deep dark woods spend some extra money to get the brightest scope you can.Driving deer? I would look at the Leupold 1.5x5 twilight hunter. Nice German 3p type reticle with a center illuminated red dot. Nice uncluttered sight picture with a very easy to acquire aim point. I have a similar now discontinued Burris with a nearly identical reticle. Excellent on moving game.

I recently gave my youngest son my 336 35 Rem with a 2-7X recent Japanese Weaver that had proven dependable.

It is all the glass you need for that calilber, and it is smaller than most scopes with the longest eye relief.

I’ve got a 1-4 leupold on mine and also just bought another for my 30-30. My 375 wears one too. I think the short scopes just look better. But I also think a 2-7 would be better for threading a bullet through the brush.

Ive run 4x and 2-7X on a couple.
Really like sub 4x for woods/movers.
Only issue is under 3X you can see the front sight. Just an mild annoyance.

Bushnell Banner on 1.5-4 power I keep it on just above 2× to eliminate the front sight ghost.

How high does it sit compared to a 1" scope in low rings?

It’s as low as you can get a scope on a Marlin.

Mine has a 1-4x20 and it works well for what I do. Seems to be always set at 3x for whatever reason.

My 336 in .35Rem wears a 2-7 Redfield Revolution, which is a rebadged Leupold. It sits really low, with the bell just clearing the sights and just enough room to manipulate the hammer at the back. I'd go that route again.
I want to say I used a Weaver base, then did the coin trick with my scope to see how high rings would need to be to clear everything, and found some Weaver-style rings from Vortex that were perfect in height and not very expensive.
