I've not yet caught the long range bug.

Perhaps, because most of my "shooting" has been directed toward load development or making sure of a rifle's POI before hunting, and my range is limited to 300 yds.

In regards to hunting, I'd say 95% of my shots are 120 yds. and under.

Having said that, I do have a couple places I can take shots out to +/- 800 yds.

In perusing different you-tube vids and a few Facebook groups I've become aware of the Sig BDX system.

I'm considering the purchase of the Sig Sierra 6, 3-18 x 44 riflescope and pairing it with the Sig Kilo5 Rangefinder.

Wondering if any of you long range guys might chime in with comments in regard to that system/combo?

Thanx in advance,

GWB

If it can read wind, and self adjust for the wind...I`m all for it.

Other wise, buy a coupla hundred extra bullets and practice.

Ya, I`m being a smart-ass...buy one and let us know how she works..

A buddy of mine has been using the system for a few years now. He has a few of them. He likes the 4.5-14x44 a lot. Its a cool system. Funny no one here talks about them much.. From what I've seen with his, it adjusts very well. I'll admit, it wasn't super long range though. From 500, then to 100, then to 50 yards. It maintained surprising accuracy at those ranges. He's ex military and says if he had that capability in the service, it would have been a game changer..

Sir, its all good. I subscribe to the bromide that "some attention is better than none",

and as far as your comment, ........ When you know you know, and you know you know, confidence replaces fear.

I'm a gadget guy and somewhat of a tech nerd, so the 'Base Map' app particularly caught my attention. Where i hunt, if one is unable to find a blood trail within 10' of a downed critter, he usually does not find his quarry due to the nature and thickness of the terrain and flora. Having the ability to use the rangefinder to drop a way point that can be tracked on a smart phone is huuuuuge, IMHO.

A while back I made a "cross canyon" shot on the best Aoudad ram of my life. I had ranged it at a tad over 400 yds. as the crow flies. It was about 1/2 hour before dark and once I got to where I thought the ram had gone down, nothing looked the same.

Had I a waypoint marked it sure could have been helpful.

ya!

geedub,

My biggest complaint about my Kestrel and Sig Kilo 3000 is that I'm not a gadget guy. Pushing all the buttons and messing with settings kinda sucks vs ranging, dialing and shooting.

If you're a gadget guy it could very well be a great system for you, but man is it tough to beat good dope taped to your stock and a reliable scope with a good reticle.

I will say the bluetooth pairing between Sig/Kestrel/iPhone has been no drama.

Screw you! I'm voting for Trump again!

I see why you might use it. Did sorta the same thing in Mt. a few years back, only in a pretty empty flat where all looked the same. Hung a bandana on a sage bush, walked to where i thought the animal had fallen...it wasn`t there, so ranged back to my marker. I was 50 yrds short.

Good Luck

Man, same deal here. I will add though, I made it one step easier for myself and added the vinyl labels to most all of my turrets. I literally just turn my scope to the yardage my rangefinder kicks out. Taking the step of looking at my laminated dope card on the stock out of the picture. They are dirt cheap and you can peel them and change as needed. On a great scope like an SS/NF/Trij you get the same principle Leupold failed at with the CDS set up, but you're reliably dialing.

The tapes don't usually interfere with the numbers that are on the dial, so in case you actually had a label peel which I haven't, you can access the good old dope chart and do it that way. It works well for me with a rifle that uses one load. Plus if I change zero's, elevation, bullet, etc it's nothing but a new label away. For me, they work well and have redundant back up as well.

I have the BDX system and mounted it on a CA Mesa in 6.5 PRC. I like the system, but for fast shots on game it's useless. If the game is stationary or moving slow , it works very well. I've not used it on game, but almost did. If it hadn't been for the fact that I had no easy was to get to the deer I'd have taken the shot at 532 yards. Sig has several videos on their site that walk you through setting up both the rangefinder and the app.

Once you get all of the necessary information in the app, your velocity, BC, etc. you need to do a velocity verification. Basically, shooting at the farthest distance you thin you'll ever be shooting at and then the app will adjust your velocity setting based on whether you are high or low on target.

I was able to hit my local long range back in September to test it out. I was shooting 130 gr. Swift Scirocco's at 3045 FPS and already had the rifle sighted in about 2 inches high at 100. I verified my site in at 100 yards then started ringing steel. My wife ran the rangefinder while I was on the gun. Since the wind was straight behind me at about 5-10 MPH I made that adjustment in the app and got after it. I can say the out to 500 yards it was dead on. I hit the small round swingers all the way to the big silhouette plates. I had some pretty impressive groups that I could see through the spotting scope. The wind picked up and started blowing from the west and I wanted to try out the wind adjustment in the app to see how accurate it was, but the day had heated up and the mirage was getting bad so we left.

I spotted a good buck following a doe at 532 yards back in December and thought about trying it out on game, but there was no way that I could have retrieved the deer so I let him follow her closer. When he got on the hill to my right at 330 yards I tried to take him, but lost him in the scope since it was nearly dark. I found him in the binocs and watched him go over the hill. I was in the same blind the next day and about 0830 he followed that same doe down the same hill and was bout to give a spike an ass whipping when I hit him. DRT. And I could get to him with my Mule. That a plus!

I have the 3-10X42 I think and the Kilo 800 rangefinder. I'm supposed to be good to 800 yards, but I don't have access to any range longer than 500 yards.

Either way, I'm pleased with the system.

The lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part!
