To me it’s a Remington model seven. I have them in 7-08 and 350 rem mag. And I’d take either one anywhere in the world.

Mine is a toss up between a Ruger 77 compact rifle 308 Winchester with the 16 inch barrel or an old Remington model 7 7mm-08 with the 18.5 inch barrel. Both are super handy for my style of hunting

hillestadj, I'm curious about how the Aimpoint is mounted. I assume it is in the scope base holes in the front of the action, but the pic doesn't give a good look at it. That is a VERY neat setup. I let a friend have my M600 35 Rem a few years ago. They are a great heavy cover stalking combination of rifle and caliber!

Of the rifles I have now that I would call handy it would be a contender carbine with a 30-30 barrel.
I had a Model 7 when they first came out with th light 18" barrel that was handy.

Study the configuration of the Win Mod 94 & 64, you've found perfection of this question! I mostly killed deer with a 20"barrel, but after I got my Mod 64 with 24" barrel, it's even better! Both mine in 30-30 which makes them even more fitting, but calibers are debatable according to use. I've read numerous times about woods rifles, handi rifles, etc, and recently one the best is articles about what's considered "Stalking Rifles", the British supposedly having perfected this especially with the Mauser actions, etc, so forth? And I don't disagree with it, knock it. Hay I'd love to have a few of them I know the quality of some, and they're not wrong. But John Browning came up with the answer to every need in the Mod 94 Win, and actually in the 73, it just lacked on calibers! And you can scope one if needed, but hay, nothing handles, comes to shoulder correctly, points and makes me quickly consistently accurate, as the 64, and if you prefer a short barrel the 94!

The Mod 64 & 71 was 2 of Herb Parsons favorites and they're actually the same configuration, stocked, just a different action for bigger calibers. No wonder, because Win was looking for to perfect the lever action after the depression, Townsend Whelen designed the stock dimensions, and the man that has the Mod 94, 64, & 71, has North American Hunting Perfection! Until you need to shoot past 200 yds. Hunters get up close anyways!

And if you need a bigger caliber than the 348 Win, a Mod 1895 covers it all, and I'm sure handles just as well!

Number 1 handiest rifle has got to be the Colt 6920 or something similar. Short ARs get a bad rap in the press and not having any sporting use, but A LOT of hunters use them here in Texas. I think they're the modern Winchester 94. I also like the Marlins. A straight-stock 336 would be nice. Specifically, the early 1980s production guns with the 18.5" barrel or the Kmart Marlins (30TK or something like that?).

Came with a one piece Weaver base when purchased. Simple matter to cut it down, deburr, hit the raw end with some sharpie, and mount up the Aimpoint.

Might as well pile on here but mine is a Model 7 20” in 7-08 sitting in a Bansner with 2.5-8 VX3i on top. I carry it anytime I plan on walking distance or getting into a tree stand.

I don’t keep a rifle around if it’s not handy, or I can’t have it made to be.

The TC Encores I had, with 16.25” 357 Max barrel and 20” 356/358 W barrel, were super short. Most typical 18-22” rifles can be pretty handy….just depends.

I’m pretty fond of my SS 20” M7 7/08. But I do love slipping slowly through the woods with a lever action marlin. I guess it depends on my mood that day.
