I have an Oberndorf Mauser that was sporterized, caliber .284 Winchester, 22" barrel. The barrel has a mark on it like a chess piece knight. Any idea who the barrel maker might have been?

I think Small Arms Manufacturing - Federal Firearms- In Presto, Pa used that stamp in the 1970s, still in business.

Yeah, that's what it sounds like to me.
Shaw Barrels (formerly E.R. Shaw) is not far down the road. Dunno if they're connected or not.

One and the same, Shaw brought out small arms. Small arms was started in the 60s I believe, by 4 guys that were employed by a steel co that shut down. Jerry, Gus, Russ and I forget #4. I worked there in 1970-74 when I got out of the Navy. We used to get crates of 98 actions in and I would inventory them. I don't know how many VZ-24s, and 1909s I bought for $20. Great guys and a good work place. Left when I got hired by the local power co.

During the time frame I was there we stamped our initials on the bottom of the barrel by the receiver ring on every barreled action we chambered.

Installed many a barrel on those 98s, that is what they looked like, not my initials. Did it come with a [bleep] stock? Were sold as Rebel rifles.
