Without splitting hairs, what's the thought on quality and craftsmanship between the weaver grand slam and a leupold vx-ii.

I was never much of a weaver fan but recently got a 3-10x40 grandslam and it is fantastic Very clear, awesome power ring,Gathers light very well, and when I sighted in adjustments were excellent. The VX-2 are great scopes,You can't go wrong either way.I several vx-2 scopes and a weaver grandslam.I would buy either scope again depending on which would work better for the particular rifle setup.

Glass is much better on the grand slam and eye relief is much better on the VX-2.

+1 grandslams have great glass and tracking, I think I own about 8 of them. My only complaint would be eye relief/eye box.

The quality and craftmanship seem to be very close from what my buddies tell me.
The big differences are in the eye relief/ eye box and the focusing system. The GS's I've played with have about 3.5 inches of eye relief and a much easier to focus eye piece. It's also much larger and sometimes can't be mounted as low as the slimmer designed Leupolds.
As far as being able to see detail, they are both the same. E

Basically so far it seems both are very similar. The scope will be mounted on a .308 remintong 700 guide series with talley light weight rings. Does that change anyone's response?

If your looking at the 3 x 10 by 40mm grand slam then yes. If your looking at the 6 x 20 by 40mm grand slam then I would advise against it, eye relief too short on that one. Thats better left for varmint and light caliber target rigs.

The GS is optically better than the VXII. Possibly tracks adjustments better too. Unless you need the extra eye relief, the GS is the better scope. I too would say the 6.5-20x might be a bit too short on eye relief for the 700. Otherwise if going with a lower power should be just right on it.

eslude,

I'm comparing the Weaver Grandslam 1.5-5x32 and the leupold vx-ii 2-7x33mm.

I have not used that power GS. I have used that Leupold. Either will be a good scope for you. The GS will definitely be better optically. It is listed as 3.25 inch eye relief. Weavers in my experience have been about at the claimed eye relief.

I think 3.25 inch is enough on a .308 700 though I would prefer not to have much less. I also would really prefer at least 3.5 inches.

Considering that I think I might suggest the VXII after all in this case.

I was leaning very heavily towards a 3-10x40 Grand Slam but ended up going with the VXII 2-7x33. I think I would have been very happy with the GS, and I think the glass is better, but I really wanted the LR reticle. The only downside to the GS is the lack of reticle choices. Other than that, it is a great scope!

I have used both the scopes you are considering , without question I perfer the Grandslams performance in low light (wish it had a heavier crosshair). If you can use a fixed 4.75 power Grandslam they were on sale plus rebate offer making it a excellent buy.

Thanks to your opinions and Ricks speedy delivery, I am now the proud owner of a new VXII 2-7x33 with Talley light weight rings mounted on a .308 stainless Remington 700 Mountain Guide

Now I hope I can hit the paper

Brian,

I don't know your level of experience, so I'll ask an honest question. Do you know how to boresight a newly mounted scope?

I believed the comment was tongue in cheek, but I thought I'd check just in case. wink

You're going to enjoy that scope.

Just a follow up to all those regarding eye relief;

After playing with the leupold I've noticed that I'm having a tough time getting the entire field of view in the scope when at high power, even with the scope mounted as far back as possible. I have to lean in further then i'd like. Any comments?

Well that is the thing I dislike about the Big L scopes. The difference in eye relief between low and hi power on variables is larger than most scopes. The vaunted eye relief of the Big L is usually only at low power in the variable. Eye relief at the high powers is quite average.

Maybe E can explain that this is an advantage since he seems to find everything about the Big L (even its shortcomings) a benefit.

Sorry I cannot be of more help. I used such a scope myself, by making it almost properly positioned at 7x, and let the view be larger than needed at the low power end.
