The main office at Johns Manville used telegram services to communicate with the rail shipments and mining offices.

Yup - years ago received one from my brother who I did not know was in Guadalajara, Mexico. It said "Marc - Help Help - Paul". That's it, it said nothing else.
He had gone to Guadalajara on vacation - I have no clue as to why there, I thought it was a real [bleep] hole. He had dinner with some locals the evening before he was to leave and apparently was slipped some sort of drug (he absolutely did not do drugs of any sort) which made him freak out when boarding the plane the next morning. Federales grabbed him and put him in their local prison. A delightful place, just as imagined, with high walls and a courtyard lined with guests sitting around the perimeter.
Anyway, despite the less than helpful telegram, I got on a plane and eventually found him and brought him home.
That is about it for my telegram experience.

No, but this is one of my favorites:

Herb Brooks:
I got a telegram from a lady in Texas today, and you know what it said?

Patty Brooks:
What?

Herb Brooks:

My wife and I went on a cruise for our honeymoon, Western Caribbean. At every port of call I had locals try to sell me weed. I declined. Found out later it was a scam by the local constabulary. Set a guy up, put him in jail, threaten him with missing his ship’s departure, have him pay a huge “fine,” release just in time to return.

Brilliant, actually.

When I started my "career" with AT&T in 1970 they put me in the AT&T Long Lines department in Chicago one Telegraph office. The dam test boards still had the old telegraph keys in place. Several of the old timers knew morse code .

My dad told me of a telegraph that was sent when he was a kid. They had been at a picnic and a girl named Ann had been bitten by ants. They found that if they kept the telegram less than 7 words they got a discount. The telegram read:

ANACIN HOSPITAL ADAMANT BITTER ASININE PLACES

No. I think our family got our first phone in about 1950. Had to ring up the switchboard at the general store.
