I cannot find any info on this cartridge, but ran across this on GB https://www.gunbroker.com/item/928671583

Could it be a typo? There were a number of .41 Specials made back in the day, but I've never heard of a .40 Special.

50 years and a few hours ago a gunsmith's wife was overheard to say, "oh, George left his tools out again, I'll just put them back in their little boxes."

The gun isn't actually stamped, that's an acid etch. So the maker went way out of his way to mark it that way. So WTF is a .40 Special? I don't see any indication the seller has any idea.

Okay I think I get it now. It's a .40 S&W Blackhawk, made for someone "special".

From the ad: Revolver is marked. 40 special, bore is .40, but not chambered for 40 s&w Seller also has this S&W. Looks like a 586 ?? S&W .40 Special

That Smith is marked SSK so it was probably some sort of rimmed .40 S&W J.D. Jones cooked up.

It is a 624 that had a 610 barrel screwed into it, and maybe a new cylinder (although it could be a 610 cylinder, too). Read the "Item characteristics.

The barrel stamp on the Smith is said to be SSR 40. I find a number of resources referencing SSR as Standard Service Revolver; a competition category. Power factors are involved for the firearms and cartridges used. Just a swag but it’s possibly a revolver set up for competition. With the seller adamant this is not chambered for .40 S&W perhaps someone came up with a rimmed .40 of some kind. If so what straight cased cartridge would it be based on?

Elmer Keith and Skeeter Skelton mentioned a guy named Pop Eimer who wildcatted several different .40-caliber cartridges, one of which was called the 40 Special. I'd expect to see Colt SAAs and older DA revolvers chambered for it. Not sure why you'd put it into a Blackhawk...

It is a 624 that had a 610 barrel screwed into it, and maybe a new cylinder (although it could be a 610 cylinder, too). Read the "Item characteristics. I agree that it's probably a 610 barrel. In picture #2, the "Smith & Wesson" stamping is off center, so it looks like the barrel has been shortened from the rear. If you look at the reflections in picture #4, you can see a flat spot under the letters "SSR" where it used to be stamped "10mm." I don't think it's a 624 because it's a five-screw frame, which was never made in stainless. I'd be interested to see if there are any dies in the estate. They'd probably go a long way toward helping identify the cartridge. Okie John

I wonder if it might be somebody's cute name for a .38/40?

Under item chararistics it says caliber 40 S&W The seller's response to my question about the item description saying 40 S&W: "40 special is what the frame says, gunbroker didn't offer that choice, made you pick something to list it, close as I could get"

He says from estate sale. He should have snagged the dies, too.
