Where would you buy an apple tree in Canada?

The larger garden centres and nurseries usually carry fruit trees. I bought several apple trees years ago from a small local garden centre. Some Canadian Tire stores carry them as well. Not sure if they all do but our local one does.

I just did a search “mail order apple trees Ontario” and plenty of Canadian mail order nurseries came up. Best of luck hope you find what you are looking for.

If you are looking for your wabigoon property the best bet would be Scmitts nursery located on the west end of Dryden

Well, I had a tree picked out, trouble is, nearly as much cost to ship it as the tree would cost. laugh

You should have known that, Richard, living in the area that long. We had a September Ruby that produced very good fruit for eating and cooking as well.

Regrettably, if you want something other than the usual suspects (Granny Smith, Red D, etc) mail order is usually your only recourse. I picked up a true Winesap and a Honeycrisp a couple of years ago, and paid the price. My preferred supplier is Fast Growing Trees, who ship nice ones in soil, but I guess shipping over the border ain’t happening.

Actually got some apples from the Winesap last season, even with my half-assed spray program. Hoping for some Asian persimmons, American filberts, and medlars before too many years pass.

wabigoon;
Top of the morning, I see your light is on and hope you're all well.

Regarding apple trees, I'd offer this about that.

Here's a link to a chart which shows which varieties will pollenate with each other.

https://www.mygardenlife.com/uploads/2018/04/104515B%20Pollination%20Chart%20800px2.png

We're looking at putting in a few apple trees ourselves actually so this is something I've been looking at too.

We've had a Granny Smith tree in the yard for over 30 years and despite all my efforts, it's never really produced well. I believe that it's likely due to the fact it's by itself and some varieties don't self pollenate that well.

Also you'll want to look at what does better in your climate too of course. We're a lot hotter here than out east so tree varieties will sometimes differ I'd think.

If you've never tried an Empire, they're an eastern variety developed in New York state. I really like them and wanted to plant one here, but am having trouble finding 2 year old trees locally and they're also perhaps not compatible with our hot summers.

Hopefully that was useful to you or someone out there this morning.

All the best and God bless.

Dwayne
