Actually a serious question for those who know such things: at what ambient temperature (not just plain old temperature) must a house be at in order for stick butter that is sitting on the counter to be capable of spreading easily on a slice of bread?

If it doesn't spread, just nuke it for ten seconds.

Butter in our house sits on the counter till it's gone...............
house is usually kept at near 76 degrees..............
not uncommon for mornings to be 70 in the house, winter time................
Will spread on plain white bread without tearing the bread......
Not uncommon for a stick to sit out for a week........

I leave mine out and it spreads nicely. The house is usually between 65 and 70F. I'm talking about real butter not that hard grease that my mother always bought. I had to put my wife and kids on notice that if they bought margarine they had to use it and stay out of my butter bowl. So they quit buying that crap and started getting the good Land O Lakes butter.

People seriously keep their houses 76 degrees? What is wrong with you all? I’d melt.

Just depends right now it's 83, the compressor went out a few days ago, I'll get it fixed sometime this next week when my buddy has time, he owes me a few favors so I called them in. I bought a window unit for my room. I told the old lady I'd let her sleep in my room for 20 bucks but she don't want to pay up, lol.

70-72 will usually do it. I saw one of those household tricks videos and it showed putting a stick of butter upright on a plate and heating a glass by just putting hot water in in for a few minutes- dump out the water so the glass is warm and place over the butter for a few minutes and the butter was the perfect conistency for spreading or baking recipes... I hope you try it so you can verify if this really works...

Our house is usually at 71 degrees. One thing I do when trying to thaw butter or margarine is put it on the granite counter top. Seems to draw out the cold faster than a Formica one.
