Picked up a 1895 and the wife is out of town so pictures will be forthcoming. It has a tang sight that I have never seen until I looked up 1895s in the Royal book and on Fig 2-15 and on the front cover there is this sight. It has no markings at all. Haven't looked under but I am sure it is marked SA. The stock is numbered to the rifle but not the crescent butt plate. The forearm is marked to another rifle and is not a 1895 style. Is there anyone or any place that I can get a 1895 forearm from? The barrel is 26 inches so that is correct but there is no crown, is that correct?

The Savage Combination Rear Sight? That's a neat one, not seen too often. It's an early Lyman, but is listed in the early catalogs as just the Combination Rear Sight or the #18 in early Savage catalogs. It was $3 in the 1897 catalog, $3.50 with an aperture.

No crown on the barrel is correct, 26" is correct, serial number on buttstock is correct, and you know the forearm is wrong. Unless somebody here has one, it might be a search to find a correct one. Should be a JM stamp on the bottom of the barrel? Is the barrel round, octagon, or half-octagon?

Barrel is round, has a Williams blank in the dovetail and under the forearm is a small half crescent with a mark in it. I know that is the M in a circle only lightly stamped. The serial number is 45xx. Actually a gray rat but it is the most correct 1895 I have had. The last one had a 30-30 barrel on it.

Well played. An 1895 in any condition these days is something to crow about.

There is a closeup of the tang sight that is on the engraved rifle on the cover in Fig. 3-10. It's a Lyman 1A SA.

David, the Lyman 1A actually has the side lock lever. The #18 Combination rear sight without the side lock is earlier, The #18 is in the 1897 to 1903 catalogs I believe.

http://www.savage99.com/tang_sights.htm has pictures of both.

The other 1895 that I had I found at Tulsa a long time ago. Thought it was odd for a 99 to have a hole in the bolt but I liked the 30 30 cal. so I got it. Spent years trying to find a 1895 barrel for it and sold it for parts. The first tang sight on Calhouns pictures #18 combination is the sight on my new 1895.

Can't trust my memory any more. Will have to stumble out to the vault and check rifles with Lyman tang sights.

Lyman tang sights are a source of confusion for me.
I thought the Lyman tang sight with locking lever was a Lyman 1 1/2. Don't know the years it was produced.
I have this box that is called No. 1A, stamped "SA", that I had thought was a Savage #18.
I had thought the sight I mentioned above goes with this box. ??

Rick, the Lyman July 1905 patent I find was was for a side lever lock. So that should be for a Lyman 1A as I posted above.

Savage 18 = Lyman 1B and was replaced by Lyman 1A
Savage 19 = Lyman 2B and was replaced by Lyman 2A

Savage used their own numbers till around 1905 then switched to the makers id.

Savage...never say "never".
