Bought a topper 30-30 like that but looked brand new @ 40 years old. I was so proud if it till the first round went klunk instead of pow. Now I knew why it was still brand new. Took it apart and the firing pin was bowed from folks trying to fire it, looked closer and the firing pin hole was to small for the pin. Bought a new firing pin and reamed the pin hole and hasn't missed a hammer fall since. Neat guns from the past. TV

This is a pre-transfer bar gun and the hammer spring seems very weak. Being a 490 I am guessing it was originally a 410 but I have no way of knowing.

From time to time H&R smiths would scribe the last 3 numbers of the receiver's serial number on the barrel lug. If those numbers match it would indicate they are a factory match.

I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

Did you check the numbers as Dinny mentioned? Yes I did and the frame is old enough that it doesn't have a serial number.

Let's try $240 shipped before I scrap it. I would take it for 240, but no ffl's here will accept from an individual.
4 out of 5 Great Lakes prefer Michigan.

it doesn't have a serial number. Is that the reason for the FFL issue mentioned above?

No. Unfortunately, the FFL I normally use is in the process of relocating and is not accepting transfers at this time.
The barrel alone is most likely worth the asking price.

Thanks, 160, I regret that it didn't work out.

Thanks, 160, I regret that it didn't work out. No problem at all and I completely understand. I had planned to part this out anyway and just thought I would try to sell it as one unit first.

Years ago I bought a similar rifle online that didn't have a serial number. My local dealer stopped processing the transfer and threatened to return it. I insisted she call the ATF for guidance and she was taught the process of transferring a gun without a serial number. It can be a PITA sometimes if a dealer hasn't experienced that before.
