Hunter718: My local gunshop just put out a Marlin Model 39A with what looked like a 24" barrel.
The serial number (as best I can remember!) was/is G165xx (I forgot the last two numbers so added the little x's) the Rifle is real nice with just ONE flaw that I could ascertain - the plastic buttplate has a "chip" out of the toe no damage to the wood.
The action was/is incredibly tight. The stock is very nice with no wood harmed. The metal is about 90% with NO scratches, rust or pitting.
The consignment asking price is either $650.00 or $675.00 - I forget (no sales tax in Montana).
The shops number is 406-683-9844 if interested it is an older gun but I am NOT sure if it is or if it isn't a Mountie model.
And I am guessing as to the vintage being in the 1950's.
Good luck in your quest.
Hold into the wind

EDIT - ADDED: Apparently the "G" prefix serial numbers indicate the Rifle was manufactured in 1950 - so close, but NO cigar.

Still looking for one of these rifles.
1953 was the first year for the Mountie, 4,335 of the 24" barrel rifles were produced. After 1953 the M had a 20" Barrel w/ straight grip stock.

The only real difference between the regular 39A and 39A Mountie for 1953, from what I can see, is the Mountie had the straight stock, lever and lower tang vs the pistol grip style. Everything else is the same, barrel length, barrel stampings etc. I picked one up some years back and at the time had no idea what I had found. I just assumed it was a regular 39A but with a straight stock. Rifle is in mint shape with great looking wood. I found it at a gun show I wasn't even going to go to but at the last minute, I decided to make a quick trip there. It was a Sunday afternoon so I figured it would be a waste of time, gas and entry fee but I went anyway. In one of the last aisles I saw a 39A on a table, inquired about it and thought the price was a steal. Being the end of the show, I got it cheaper than the tagged price. To this day, I am still shocked that it sat on that table, at such a cheap price, for the entire show. I ended up finding a 39A Octagon the same way, on a Sunday afternoon for cheap money.

The took the 53 Mountie home, cleaned it up and posted pics on the Marlin forum. It was then that I learned what I had. I haven't seen another one since.

I collect expensive hobbies.
