Gents,
General query re pellet type and manufacturer with regards to killing starlings and Eurasian Collared doves, etc at up to 25+ yards with a Crosman 1377 pump pistol.
Pistol has been modded to include steel breech, longer barrel, Wilson adjustable sights, a higher pressure port, etc. Unfortunately I don't know what fps I'm getting.
I have been dispatching E. doves at 25 yards with Crosman Premier pointed pellets. My best run was 6 for 6.

Stick with these pellets? Or try something else? I'm a bit overwhelmed by the choices, looking for recommendations. Thanks

Get a good rest, and shoot some paper.

With pellets, weight is more important than shape, when tryin ta find the one that shoots best at the range a pistol is gonna shoot.

I'm hoping to order up a variety within the next few days.

A question: can hollow point pellets realistically be expected to expand at all at pistol velocities?

No.

But that's mostly because what you're shootin has no solid resistance, i.e., bird bones.

The skirt will still deform, cause that's what it is designed ta do.

Most important to a kill is the wound channel. Did it go through somethin vital.

And even if ya just wounded it, it's still gonna die.

Makes sense. Thanks.
I have yet to recover a pointed bullet from a dove, etc.

Friday night I smoked a rat with a crosman .17 cal 7.9gn hallow point. I was very surprised that it entered and exited the rat. Exit wound was definitely larger then the entrance.

I figured I would miss the shot due to beer consumption. It was about a 5 yard shot.

No.

They punk up, at best, from a rifle.

The HP's do have the benefit of being flat with a dish.

For about the best smack and kill, Crow Magnums get my vote (a really flat faced HP) with a match pellet behind. Pointy and round are way down on the effective list.

I'd stick with what works.

I always go for the most accurate pellets in my air guns, though, the pellet design isn't really something I worry about all that much. Pretty much any of them do the job if you put them where you're aiming, especially on little birds or mice/rats

Try several flat point pellets. At the ranges you are talking they should shoot fine and they hit with a pop. Minimal shoot throughs, all energy dumped in the critter.

Appreciate all the suggestions. Think I'll try a little of everything and see what shoots best, then try those on the starlings and Collared doves

Generally, 10 pumps is about 600fps in a 1377. Maybe you have a smidge more? Anyway a 8 grain pellet at 600 would be 6+ ft/lbs, and a 10 grainer about 8 ft/lbs at the muzzle. I would be trying the heavier pellet, and testing for accuracy.
