I recently acquired a Mauser 98 in commercial configuration. The caliber is 8x57 with commercial sights. It is very light weight at under 6 pounds. There are no maker marks on the action. In fact the only markings are the caliber, serial number and a small German eagle stamped on the right side just above the stock line near the front of the receiver ring. My question is what the eagle indicates. I am hoping some of you more knowledgeable on the subject might comment your thoughts. Here is a picture of the eagle stamping.

I had a browning 9mm Hi power that had the same eagle stamped on it. I was told it was proof marked accepted by the German govt - probably for Army use WW2 era.

The German Eagle used by the Nazis had outstreached wings standing on a swastika which looks , I believe , to be cast out. After The War The German Eagle was one that had drooping wings.

Your gun was a war time gun made over to commercial later on. They were the best ones.

Based on one photo and caliber and description given: You have a gun that was a German WWII military issue K98k. The gun was later scrubbed and re manufactured into a civilian rifle. This type of work was done by a lot of small gunshops in Germany post war(and Europe). Many were purchased by occupation troops for many years.

Funny or odd, they removed the other markings. And, I am no experts, although I like to pretend. I think there were typically 3 stamps lined up in the location. I am not sure, I think the mark was slightly defaced under the bird. The evil symbol removed. And there was a tiny number.

So, just like Malcom said.

That isn't a Nazi eagle with the Swastika peened, it's the German Eagle over N stamp adopted in 1939. It replaced the Crown over B U G stamps.

A better identification could be made with some pics.

I stand corrected. I coped the image and rotated for a better look.

Goes to prove the old saying "garbage in results in garbage out". Cudos to those who could recognize the image and set us straight smile
