I have a mid 90's Remington Sportsman 78 30-06 that has a very long throat. Tried every boat tail available at that time, could not find a load that would consistently print under an inch at 100 yards. Serendipitously I bought a box of Speer 180 grain Spitzers. Bug holes. Hornady spitzers shot just as well. 180 gr Hornady RN's shot even better. Later I read somewhere in passing that sometimes barrels with long throats shoot spitzers better, I suspect they get a straighter shot into the rifling.

Thanks for all the input guys. I might just stick with the nosler ballistic tip for now. I would like to try out some different bullets but that might have to wait till primers become available again. The noslers shoot great so I should probably save primers and just stick with that load for now.

Yesterday I captured this 150 nosler ballistic tip. It traveled through about 12" of real soft punky Doug fir stump and stopped in a bunch of bark I stacked up verticaly behind the stump. Fired from the 30-06 traveling about 2900 fps. Not sure on the distance, I was practice shooting from 75-200 yards.

Very true, the BT are boattails.

Could the crown need a little touch up?
