After a nearly three month wait, I received my new .357 Max Contender carbine barrel from MGM. On the first trip to the range, the action opened on three of the seven shots. When I contacted MGM, they said send us the barrel and the frame. I tried the barrel on a second frame. It closed with great difficulty and was nearly impossible to open. The problem with the barrel wasn't specific to one frame and I was not interested in having a Contender barrel that was custom fit to one frame. I sent the barrel to MGM asking them to correct the problem so that the barrel would fit any Contender frame or to send me a refund. They refunded the cost of the barrel but not the shipping cost either way. So this endeavor cost over $50, plus time, ammo and aggravation.

I have purchased three MGM Encore barrels with no issues at all but I will be very reluctant to buy an MGM for a Contender.

Just an FYI, I have/had 2 Bullberry barrels one old one new Bullberry Legacy........

They both fit on every Contender frame G1 and G2, T/c and S&W, that I own, without a hitch............

IMHO, they should cover shipping too.........

BTDT. They want you (or them) to shim the action for their barrel, which can leave you with other barrels that won’t fit. I also had a .22 barrel that was a tight fit, and clearly the action shim for the MGM barrel would have left me SOL with that one. Their solution is completely at odds with the concept of the Contender. With the Encore, shimming is much simpler, and might be worth the minor inconvenience, but since TC went under, I have no desire to own a dead-end.

Excessive headspace. I talked to Marty at Haus of Arms at some length about it and he said it was a common issue with MGM barrels, and confirmed that shimming the receiver for that barrel might well make it unusable with others without adjusting the shims. No thanks, too much trouble.

That sucks. Been wanting to order a new contender barrel. Looked at Bullberry but their twist rates listed are all slow.

Bullberry will give you any twist you want, all you have to do is tell them.

Disappointing to hear, haven’t had any figment issues yet with MGM. Hard pill to swallow though for. $450 barrel
