Here in Australia the 99 is a rare rifle to see, The ones that I have seen are a few of the older 22HP and the modern .308Win models not much else only my 99A Series A in .308 and .358. When a 99 is for sale they are not cheap and sell quickly.

99s cost a bit more than 94s or Marlins and the South was poorer than the rest of the country.

After staring this thread I attended a local gun show this weekend, and wouldnt you know it. There were about a dozen 99s there. All were way overpriced, but they were there. I guess I spoke too soon. Thanks for all the replies guys.
Always remember that you are unique, just like everyone else.

I think that the popularity of the Marlin 1893/36/336 and Winchester 1894/94 was due in no small part to their lower prices when compared to the Savage 1899/99. There are also a lot more Winchester 1894/94s around than there are Winchester 1886s, 1895s, 55s, 64s, and 71s, probably also due to the price difference. Remember that the average working man/woman had a lot less disposible income between 1900 and 1945 than he/she has had since the end of WW2.
Since there isn't a long tradition of deer hunting in Nebraska, at least compared to the New Hampshire of my youth, it is understandable that there are fewer pre-1960 era CF rifles around here. Calhoun and I are the only hunters who I have ever seen, or heard of, hunting deer with Savage 99s in the 17 years that I have lived here. Even during the 20 years that I hunted deer in NH, 1970 thru 1990, the number of Savage 99s that I saw in the field was pretty limited and were mostly post-WW2 99Fs and 99EGs. Post-WW2 Marlin 336s, Remington 740s, 742s, 760s, Ruger 44s, Savage 340s, and Winchester 94s were by far the most common rifles that I encountered in the field. Toward the end of that time, the Ruger 77s were becoming more common in the woods.

Your average deer hunter is lots better off with a medium power lever action than a high power bolt gun.
