Top U.S. health officials warned Tuesday that a surge of COVID-19 cases driven by the highly transmissible Omicron subvariant BA.5 has arrived, but stressed that the country has the tools — like vaccines and antiviral treatments — to prevent people from getting seriously ill.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert and chief medical adviser to President Biden, said that BA.5 “substantially evades neutralizing antibodies” induced in people who have been vaccinated or previously infected.
“BA.5 puts the nail in the coffin of the myth that the virus will evolve into a milder form and fade away,” Dr. Eric Topol, founder of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, wrote Tuesday in the Los Angeles Times. “We could easily see more variants — indeed a whole new family with more extensive immune evasion and growth advantage — in the months ahead.”
According to CDC data, 67% of the U.S. population is considered fully vaccinated, having received the first two doses of Pfizer or Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccines or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID shot. But less than half of those eligible for boosters (47%) have gotten one, and a new booster targeted to BA.5 isn’t expected until October at the earliest.

I don't think anyone will buy it this go around. Civil disobedience to any pushed shutdown will be widespread. You're joking right???? There are still idiots wearing masks in my neck of the woods. That means they are still scared and will obey anyone that instructs them on just how to live to avoid dying from this super duper deadly virus.

I've heard of one person in the last 4-5 months having a bad time with covid, as in "hospital-bad". Folks I know are done with it.
Went to a big cook-out for July 4th. It was announced the next day that one of the attendees tested positive that morning, so folks should maybe watch for symptoms. Nobody really even made it a thing. For most, it is not considered a big deal around here anymore.
Now with even more aplomb

I haven't seen a mask in a year it seems but let me ask you this - more masks than not? Then I could see widespread compliance with a shut down order. But not likely. It depends. I live approx 45 minutes south of Pittsburgh and rarely see a mask worn. I do a real good job of staying away from town but the closer I get to that chithole, the more masks I see. I spent the last 2 days working right outside of the city (10) minutes from downtown and I bet it was 15% - 20%. That's enough to jump to 50/50 if they spin it right. Libs are horrified of the virus and even more scared to think for themselves.
