Need to be enlightened on how Savage assigned serial numbers on their rifles. Did they do a batch of say 99 EG's in 300 Savage in sequential numbers then do a batch of 99 R's in 300 Savage in sequential numbers or were different calibers mixed in.

my guess, had a work order to make a certain # and calibers, I don't think they would have made a certain number of any one caliber at any time.

Curious, why do you need to know?

I don't anyone except someone inside Savage would know for sure.
It appears Savage did give serial numbers some consideration at a high level with s.n. cutoffs, 500,000, 800,000, etc.
Beyond that, serializing batches of receivers would likely be sequential, but what caliber/direction the rec'rs went would be driven by forecast/orders in a manufacturing environment. Could be anything that made money that day.

Just got curious if there was any way to correlate the number of rifles produced based on serial numbers and calibers. I figured there had to be a reason for producing xxxxx number of Savage 99 EG's in 300 Savage. Certainly demand had to play a part and future plans for expanding calibers and models. I mean did the workers just get told "this week we are going to produce 800 99's in 300 caliber and next week 700 99 R's".

They might do batches of models or certain calibers at the same time.. they might not. Batches would be different sizes, so there's no real way to use serial numbers to figure out models or calibers.

At what point in the process did they stamp the serial number? Before fitting the stock and forearm, so they would have a SN to stamp on the wood? Before or after the receiver assembled (the rotor and cartridge guide were cartridge specific)? Different process timing required after 1968 gun law?
