I am considering an LPVO scope for a compact 338federal rifle, but I’m not sure which brand or model to consider.
This will be used in bear country and at the range for fun.
I would like an illuminated dot for 1x close shooting with both eyes open. I think 400 yds would be at the very max I would expect to shoot this at the range and even less on animals, so max power of 6x would be fine. I would like capped windage and possibly capped elevation if the reticle allowed holdover to that distance. I’m not sure if FFP or SFP matters because id assume it would either be on min or max power.
Just looking for suggestions on a simple, useful, solid LPVO. Thanks.

Maybe one of the Trijicon 1x6's or the SS 1x6 HD's. Both would work pretty well for what you are asking.

I've used the Nightforce NX8 1-8 a fair bit now. It's pretty quick on 1x and the red dot is VERY bright. FFP so you can use the reticle at any power. Capped windage, zero stopped elevation dial. Nice setup and layout on the reticle, power, and elevation adjustment. Fairly compact, well built, decent glass. Most of my use has been on a couple of AR's from very close to 300 yards.
Only complaints: 1. Adjustments are in .2 mil rather than .1 (1/2 MOA on moa models). 2. Thick dot can cover a fair bit of target at longer range. 3. Sometimes it's helpful to adjust focus when moving from 1 to 8x - not required but I like to tune it a bit at longer range.
After using them a fair amount, I'd like to see the same scope with .1 mil adjustments, 32 or 42 mm objective, and a find cross hair rather than the circle/dot. It would make a really nice mid/lighter weight dependable hunting scope.

Thanks for the replies. I should add that SWFA scopes are hard to get here in Canada. Have to import them through the UK, so cost goes way up. I Should have also added “cost” as a criteria. I bet the NX8 is amazing, but thats way more money than I’m looking to spend.

What about Trijicon? Are they available to you? I have a lightly used Trijicon Credo 1-6x24mm mrad with red segmented circle reticle on the way. Got it at a good price.

Have a compact 6.8 SPC bolt gun that I was looking for the same for. Settled on the Trijicon Accupoint 1-6 and couldn’t be happier.

I know this question is subjective based on several factors but what ranges are you guys comfortable to with the 6 power and what size target?

I know this question is subjective based on several factors but what ranges are you guys comfortable to with the 6 power and what size target? Depends on the reticle subtension and target size. Not that they are ideal in this role, but I've successfully used 6x scopes beyond 1000 many times.

SWFA SS 1-6 is a great LPVO and a great multi purpose optic. Love mine.

I've consistently shot BC Steel targets to 700 yards with my Vortex Razor HD 1-6x. I believe my limiting variable to go further was the cartridge (.223 Rem).

Jordan and Tyler
Thanks for the first hand info. The Credo has been on my radar for general purpose. I’ve just had no real world experience with trijicon products.

I’m finding nothing but positive feedback everywhere I search, so I’m looking forward to using it.

Our most popular LPVO is the Steiner P4Xi 1-4x24ONE PIECE 30MM TUBE for increase strength and reliability. 4X ZOOM provides maximum range at the high end and true eyes-open situational awareness at low magnification. CONSISTENT EYE RELIEF and a generous eye box throughout the magnification range. LOW PROFILE TURRETS / ILLUMINATION CONTROLSare less likely to hang up or snag during movement. ILLUMINATED RETICLE with 5 day/4 low Light/2 NV levels. An “Off” position between all 11 settings completely disconnects the battery at each off position to prevent battery drain. WATERPROOF / FOGPROOF / SHOCKPROOF durable construction you can trust to stand up to any cold or wet conditions.

I'm looking for a LPVO for my AR and have been gong back and forth between the Steiner Doug posted and the Trijicon Accupoint. I'm trying to figure out if I would like the triangle reticle of the trijicon.

The Steiner was discussed a few years ago?
If memory is accurate it was considered good bang for the buck at its initial price but not as much value at the more recent price.
