Ok, at the risk of being unfriendly here,

I’ll pass along what I was told about Black Nitride,

I bumped this 7 year old thread because I’m going to have a Custom rifle made,

The Rifle maker uses Defiance actions almost exclusively,

When we were talking about the build I asked about Black Nitride,

He said they are about to move away from BN, doesn’t seem to last according to them….

I’ve never had a action or rifle with BN so take it for what it’s worth.

Me, I’ll be going with plain ole Stainless , Action and barrel,

I rolled the dice on a previous build with a different coating, No interest to do it again.

You guys with a BN action or barrel, and it’s worked for you,,,, feel free to call me crazy.

I am really not happy with either one of you right now. I was fine not knowing anything about this but now can think of little else. 😂

I was going to do the action in nitride and the barrel in a matching cerrakote.

I went with the Defiance since it cost me less in the end to get an action that was straight and true from the get go, with solid mounts on top that didn't need to be touched by a gunsmith. A M70 Magnum action need to be opened up and trued in order to properly fit a 300 RUM sized cartridge. Once the smiths start putting mills to steel the bargain you are able to score a M70 action for quickly goes out the window in my opinion.

Very very nice!

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

I thought BN was impregnated in the metal and was not a surface coating? If so, I wonder what they mean by lasting?

My understanding of BN is the hardening of the metal and the corrosion protection never wears off but the appearance of the can change fairly easily and makes it look like the finish has worn off but it is aesthetic only.

That's my idea of it as well. I have seen a few that have been hunted hard and still look great.

That action looks amazing. As an alternative, take a look at American Rifle Company's "Mausingfield". I had Chad Dixon at Long Rifles Inc. build me a rifle with one and I'm very pleased.

Just so anyone reading this thread is on the same page, you are speaking specifically of the CRF - not defiance actions in general - correct? I know when I ordered mine there was a delay in getting a vendor part which they didn’t manufacture. My suspicion is, if they aren’t currently taking orders for them, it may be the same part.

When I spoke to them last week they said current lead time for new orders will be 15 months.

They told me yesterday they were not taking any new customers until further notice regardless of what you were purchasing. If you have ordered from them before you might be good and I heard 15 months also regardless of action type.

That sucks if true. I was checking in on a crf short action for a .308 build. It was due to ship in july. Just headed out for nitride so another 1-2 months. Plenty of time to have it ready for 2023 season.

Not sure what to tell you that is what they told me on the phone so I have no reason to doubt what they said.

They did mention some current dealers will take custom orders and encouraged me to call them but declined to name any.
