I'm going to try 150 e-tips in my 30-06. I don't think I've used a 150 gr anything since I re-barreled this current rifle. I think 3000 ft/sec is very doable and have lined up Big Game, H4350, and Re 16 for potential test loads. A 150 e-tip at 3000 is pretty flat. It might go elk hunting in October.

BTW: I started to wade through Good 30-06 Loads and after 10 pages called it quits.

Thanks.

Hell yeah, I can't see why that wouldn't knock an elk down in the dirt! That quicker start speed and decent BC may just be excellent.

Looking forward to hearing how it works out on paper B!

Last elk I saw killed died from a 155 Scenar at just under 2800 fps muzzle velocity. Bull at 400 dropped real fast. You'll be just fine. H4350 for that one.

Hey Scott!

Been shooting the 150 etip in my 308 all spring. 2880 in my Kimber. Been thinking of taking it, mainly because it's my favorite rifle and I've killed a pile of animals with it. But a fast stepping 150 launched from the 06 shoots flatter. I should be able to get 3000 - 3050.

I can’t see it being anything but great from either rifle. Shot fast like that makes the monos seem real darned good in my opinion. Bet they’ll crush some bone as well.

Never tried anything 150 in my 06 but 3000-3050 should make a heckuva versatile load.

Bill, how did your rifle like the etips?

If anyone has some StaBall lying around, you might try that. Hodgdon data with 150BTs goes to 3100+.

1 MOA consistently with some better. Varget, H4895, were ~ 1 MOA, IMR 8208 about 1.25. As general FYI, Varget at 47 gr, 2885, 0.82 net, H4895 at 45 gr, 2927, 0.95 net, 8208 at 45 gr, 2888, 1.20 net. All velocity measured 15 feet from the muzzle in temps from 25-45 degrees. A 6.5 lb rifle flinging a mono at 2900 should work <G>

Also Shooter Pro shop had 30 cal 150 e-tips. I may have bought a "few".

They've gotten me a few times in the past with stuff like that too!

Those 150's from your 308 seem quite good as well looking at the numbers you posted for Brad. The ETip is one I haven't used as much over the years, but I know a few that really like them and have done well on elk with them. Probably take a bit of elk to hold onto one of them I bet.

My rifle likes the TTSX just as well, and the loads it likes are almost identical between the TTSX and e-tip. I wanted to try the e-tip because it has a bit more BC plus, from photos I've seen, seem to open wider. We'll see. I plan to use e-tips this year for deer to elk. I should a have a good idea what they'll do by Christmas given any amount of luck and copious doe tags.

Been loading 59 grains of IMR 4350 for 50 years, accurate in 20 plus rifles. Nosler 150 grain partitions

Thanks Bill. You didn't happen to load 46-46.5 Varget behind the etip? Curious about velocity and accuracy backing off a bit...

I’m Curious too Brad.

Not the same bullet but my .308 is shooting 150gr Partitions at 2,775 fps with 46.0 gr Varget. Accuracy = 0.58” 3 shot groups at 100 yds…confirmed twice. The ES/SD on that load were both in the single digits too.

I wish I could say the velocity was around 2,850…that was my goal with 150 Partitions in this rifle, but I don’t think the dead animals are gonna care.😁

I worked up from 45 to 47 in 0.5 gr increments, 47 was the best shooting over numerous 3 shot groups. That said, none of the Varget groups were bad. Over a range of bullets, my rifle prefers Varget, 8208, AR Comp (unobtainium for a long time now). H4895 gives me good velocity but normally one of the other 3 give better groups.

I've shot 27 bazillion shots down that tube and it still holds 1 MOA most days. It used to be less then MOA but it's getting long in the tooth. Likely be wearing a Lilja 84m mod contour barrel next year. Might even go 23". I did a 23" Lilja 84m mod on my 338 Fed and really like the balance. My calculations indicate a longer, slightly heavier contour will add 3 oz to the gun, mostly from mid point out - which to me is a good thing in an 84m. It should weigh 6lbs 9oz with a NF SHV in Talley LWs. At times, I've toyed with the idea of buying another 84m 308 - set them up identical. But then my practical side brings me back to reality and asks "why"?

Mentioning my 338 Fed, it flings 185 TTSX at 2700 and is also a candidate to go west this year. I love the Fed cartridge in the 84m. With the 185, it shoots flatter than it would initially seem. I really like the thought of hunting in the timber with the 338. I've shot most of my elk still hunting in the timber during the day. I've shot a couple at 10 yards or less, most less than 50 yards. I shot a bull 4-5-6 years ago quartering to me. I don't feel over-gunned with that shot situation. Quartering-to elk shoulders require a bit of penetration.

Is it elk season yet????

I could like a 338 Federal set up like you did..

And I second the thought of "is it elk season yet".. This work stuff is for the BIRDS! grin

Bwinters - I think your 30-06, pushing a 150 E-Tip at around 3,000 fps is going to be terrific on elk!

No, I don't have a load for you, haven't messed with that particular bullet just yet.

Looking forward to your range & hunt reports!

I’ve had fantastic results with several 30-06 rifles including some a terrible shooter with sentimental value. Superformance a grain under maximum with WLR primers std max length with 150grain TTSX 3050 FPS. Tried dozens of loads in Dads old Ruger was going to get a JES rebore until this load shot under an inch.

R17 if you have any. It’ll give you the best speed and typically gives stellar accuracy.
