Have inherited a pre 64 model 70. Probably around 1955. Bluing is about gone and the stock has been refinished 3 times that I know of. Here is what I am after. Want to have it barreled for 7x57. Want a decent , but, not fancy stock. This is going to be a hunting rifle , not, a showpiece. There are some out there that are truly artists, but, that is not what I am after. If it looked like it did when they left the factory in that time frame it would be perfect. Anyone have any suggestions on who to talk to about such a project?
Roger Ferrell is an amazing gun maker. He is way more than a gunsmith! He is in Fayetteville GA. At least give him a call. He will do as much or as little as your budget supports.
Sounds like a great project. I am fond of the 1950's and '60's American custom rifles and styling. I have seen a couple of '60's Biesen rifles which were just like what you describe; simple, not too fancy, and meant to hunt. One was a 7x57 and belonged to Val Geist who literally wrote the book on bighorn sheep. I'm sure there are a lot of gunsmiths out there who can do exactly what you are looking for and I wish I could give you a name. Redneck, on this forum could certainly do a fine job for you as could Jim Kobe (Jkob on here). I'm sure there are a bunch of others. You just need some one who hunts, who likes Model 70's, and who appreciates the rifle has a functional tool. It shouldn't be too hard to find one. GD

Have owned 2 Ferrell rifles in the past. Great shooters, FG stocks so can't comment on his woodwork... Using this guy now for woodwork. Shaen gets the go button for FG and barrel work.
When people face the possibility of freezing or starving there is little chance they are going to listen to unfounded claims of climate doomsday from a bunch of ultra-rich yacht sailing private jet-setting carbon-spewing hypocrite elites

I beleive the model 70 is right up Redneck's alley

I’ve used Jim Kobe for a number of builds, with excellent results.
