The Sheepdog was in bad shape when they got it. The original owner never removed the puppy collar as it grew so it had a severe esophagus problem and a lung disease of some sort, as well as, one bad eye that looked normal and "good" eye that seeped puss all the time. Several times it was touch and go with the dog, but she pulled through each time. Her Mom spent ~10K on vet fees and the dog had to be fed in a chair or else it would asphyxiate. Her Mom and I are divorced. After expressing my condolences to my daughter, I told her that her good care of the dog enabled it to live 2 more good years, which she understood and appreciated. She was with the dog as it passed.

I'm trying to think of some positive words I can tell her later tonight.

Darned sand and smoke blowing...

Your X and daughter are pretty great, IMO.

As a 4 year old kid living out in the country in the old days it was only me, mom, dad, the biotch and Pal.

Pal got distemper and died. I remember going in the kitchen and the walls closed in and squished me or something. I couldn't breath. For a good while. Dayom.

There is not much more to say that what you did. You know her compassion with lead to helping other animals, and possible people. The grief is necessary, just dont let it overpower the good that was done. Its cliche' to remember the good times..... but without her, that dog would not have had any. Knowing and feeling loved is primal for us all. With time, she will find that she is needed again, for another neglected animal that needs saved.

Saving people or animals is not for the faint of heart.
