Got a cow tag for November and going to be staying with a friend in Dubois. Trying to figure out when the best time to go out would be. Just looking to get a couple coolers full of meat and come home.
Any recommendations on the right time to go? I have archery hunted multiple times in that area in September. Never gone for a rifle cow hunt. I know the area around Five Pockets, Double Cabins, Cartridge Creek etc. Just trying to figure out the best time to catch herd movement and shoot a cow.
Is this an appropriate question to ask? Not looking for places to hunt or information on bugling bulls.

All depends on the weather.
Need a good snow storm of about 18 inches over night and they will be everywhere.
When the tailgate drops the BS stops.

Apparently, they don’t use calendars! 😉 memtb Someone did some research on that some years ago. Their findings were that bears will delay denning until just before a heavy storm that will blow snow over the den entrances. I don't know how true that is, though. I haven't messed with bear dens.

MT, Be up early and headed out before daylight if you can. Do you have or have access to a snow machine? November is not usually too bad with snow, but it's the mountains... The elk WILL be getting bounced around by other hunters so do have backup plans in place as to where you hunt.
Are you getting a woof tag? Saw a pack of 4 on the back side of Spring Mountain season before last.

Later is generally better though if there’s too much snow the elk could all be on private and roads can get drifted in.
Just some things to keep in mind.
